Becoming our moms: Spilling over tea/coffee May 2017

bmoms

Another month, another race in the books. It’s been a very atypical year for me when it comes to racing! Technically a PR, because it was my first trail race, yet the slowest half marathon I’ve ever run.

Confessions of a Mother Runner

Today I am joining up with Coco and Deborah for their ultimate coffee tea date.

If we were enjoying high tea . . .
I’d tell you that all that work on my parents home made me feel very alone. I had no time for my friends. I was often working on the house by myself, although sometimes with my sister.

My parents wanted to know when they would see me (they are always asking that), only I told them I was too busy working on their house — essentially doing the things they ought to have done — to be able to visit with them.

My father is constantly complaining about where they are, that they can’t go to the movies, see their friends (many of whom are no longer there), basically go where they want when they want. Hello? I couldn’t do that stuff either because of them.

I didn’t have time to go to the movies, barely had time for things like haircuts and massages. The only thing that kept me going was knowing that I wouldn’t be doing this forever, even if some days it felt like I would.

I know, of course, that I am not the only person in the world that is/was going through this, yet sometimes it just felt that way. The good news is their house should be on the market very soon.

Always wanted the cat print; hadn’t thought about the bench before

If we were enjoying high tea . . .
I’d tell you I know how women turn into their mothers: they take in all their stuff! We’re not even quite done and I’m still trying to figure out where to put stuff. And I suppose that makes this post appropriate, since Mother’s Day is next weekend.

Don’t entertain much but I’m sure my mom will enjoy me using this pitcher for Thanksgiving

If we were enjoying high tea . . .
I’d tell you that I was very tempted to skip my first of the month Weight Watchers weigh in — after a half and getting back home basically the day before . . . I wasn’t sure I’d be free (you have to be within two pounds of your goal weight on your first weigh in for the month).

I mean, I had pizza and cheese sticks the night before and after the half, and another slice of pizza the next night, too. There was, indeed, a fair amount of chocolate after the race. And I picked up a medium bag of Garret’s cheese popcorn during our layover in Chicago and no one wanted to help me with it!

I know, however, that when you least want to go is the time you most need to go. By some miracle I’d actually dropped a little weight.

Oops I did it again

If we were enjoying high tea . . .
I’d tell you I dragged Mr. Judy to another salt den when we were at his mother’s. They say it’s good for allergies, and he really suffers with them. He was able to get a groupon, but he was not impressed — and I will admit his allergies seem no better. It was worth a shot.

If we were enjoying high tea . . .
I’d tell you that while I’ve been kind of dragging this week, after that quick cross country trip + a half + poor sleep the entire time we were there, I feel okay.

Was it the visit to the salt den? Just don’t ask Mr. Judy about it . . .

If we were enjoying high tea . . .
I’d tell you that while I’ve enjoyed my two halfs this year so far and am definitely looking forward to the next one, I am also looking forward to staying put for a while after that. I just hope that the rain finally goes away and mostly stays away and we have some enjoyable weather.

Three trips and three half in three months plus all the trips to my parents’ house . . . I’m ready for a little relaxation. Except it’s never quite as relaxing at home, either.

If we were enjoying high tea . . .
I’d tell you I got in a lot of yoga while we were at my MIL’s. We often fixed our own meals and helped with the clean up, but there was no other house chores to do, no animals to take care of . . . it’s surprising just how much time that frees up!

Tea? Iced Tea? Coffee? Decaf? Or something else?

Do you have stuff from your mom you want — or treasure if she’s gone?

Do you feel as though you’re turning into your mom?

If you have sunny weather, send some my way — pretty please?

  1. We have one of those salt dens that opened up here- I always wondered what they were like? Sounds like you two were not to impressed! Now that my mother is gone I do have a few of her things, it was tough to go thru them and divide them up. Enjoy your weekend and I am sending warm and dry thoughts your way!

    1. My husband tends to be a skeptic about anything; I’m still on the fence. But it’s a nice way to relax & the friend I went with here is already plotting another trip — she really enjoyed it!

We have made a lot of passes through my parents stuff. I suppose it’s a lot easier doing it while they’re still alive, but we’ll still have to go through their apartment someday, too. At least it shouldn’t take months & months now.

Mother Nature has most definitely not gotten the warm & dry memo. There’s got to be a happy medium between our weather & yours.

      Have a great weekend!

    1. Well, all I can say about the one near my MIL is that my husband was the one who found it — so it’s his own fault.

It was meant to be, because instead of being downtown, it wasn’t too far from my MIL — we couldn’t persuade her to come, though.

  2. My parents started giving me stuff randomly. Most doesn’t fit my lifestyle but is still nice to have – love that china! Everyday chores do take up a lot of time but being home is nice!

  3. I have never heard of salt dens….not sure if they have any of those nearby (I’m pretty sure they do not exist in my little town LOL). My mom and I have very different taste in most everything, but I do have a few treasured things from her mom (dining room set, lefse iron, side table in my entry way, misc. serving dishes, etc.).

    1. Our town isn’t all that big, although being the capitol of NY, not tiny either. Still just happenstance that this opened up literally within walking distance!

That bench, and a cabinet I hope to bring back next week, are the only pieces of furniture from my mom. Most of hers was way too dark & heavy for my taste — there was one dresser everyone wanted, but since my sister did the bulk of the work, it went to her.

  4. Dang, I hadn’t really realized it, but you have been traveling a lot! I bet you will enjoy staying put for awhile!

Salt den? Is there caramel involved??? lol

I’m always telling both my hubby and my kids to PLEASE tell me if I start acting like my Mother …so I can STOP immediately! 🙂 That china set of your Moms is really very beautiful and classic.

    Have a great weekend Judy!

  5. Not turning into my mother. My husband tells me I am more like my father. I have a few things that were my mother’s. Of course they wanted to see you. My parents became a bit more clingy the older they became. I was lucky that they were both in good health & able to care for themselves until the last few months of their lives. I never heard or seen the salt caves you’ve written about. I do have a Himalayan salt lamp in my kitchen that runs 24 hours a day.

    1. I think I have some of both of my parents in me, and then in other ways — completely different. And yes, my parents have become a LOT more clingy.

I’ve been considering a salt lamp for the bedroom!

  6. I often feel I am turning into my mom. But I don’t mind. I have signed up for a half in Burgundy in November ! and waiting to sign up for a Disney race here in Sept, but besides that nothing else really tempts me at the moment.

  7. Everyone always told me that I looked more like my dad’s side of the family, but as I’ve gotten older I see my mom when I look in the mirror. Sometimes I say or do things that remind me so much of her, too.

It sounds like you can see the light at the end of the tunnel, or at least I hope so!

    1. Unfortunately I definitely resemble my Dad’s side. My mom has this great facial bone structure which I totally didn’t inherit (although I did inherit her hazel eyes).

The house is pretty much done. There will still be lots of trips down to see my folks, but not every weekend anymore, which I am soooooo very grateful for.

  8. Working on your parents house has to be a mix of emotions. Your father sounds a bit like mine would be one day. LOL!
In regards to the salt room, I have to agree with Mr. Judy…I tried one a year or so ago and it didn’t seem to help me. I’ve got some bad sinus/allergy issues, so not sure what the deal is with it working for some and not others.
Hope you can get in some down, relation time soon!

    1. I’m not sure there’s ever down time, but I think we’re actually done with the house. It seemed like it would never end.

Of course someday we’ll have to go through their present apartment but that’s a smaller task.

      1. True! They look ok when I’m smiling, but dreadfully saggy when I’m not! But I did inherit the small chin that leads to those particular wrinkles!
