Half #17, State#15: 6/5- 11 Weekly Wrap

We spent the week before Utah Valley Half hiking around southern UT. Nothing super strenuous although some trails were definitely challenging!

I’m joining up with the Weekly Wrap from Holly @ Hohoruns and Tricia @ Misssipppiddlin so we can all inspire each other to stay active.


Workouts update

  • Monday: Hiked Bryce Point to Inspiration Point, Bryce Canyon 
  • Tuesday: Hiked Sunset Point to Queen’s Garden to Sunrise Point, 4.5 “easy”run
  • Wednesday: Hking in Zion: Lower Emerald Pools to Grotto Trails
  • Thursday:  Hking in Zion: Watchman & Riverwalk
  • Friday: Drive back from Zion, rest, carb loading with other bloggers 
  • Saturday: Utah Valley Half Marathon 
  • Sunday: Recovery

Running updates 


Running at 8000′ is no joke. Especially not uphill halfway and in 80 degree heat. Oh, after hiking 4 miles earlier. 

The good news is when I turned around and went downhill it was more confidence building. 


Running downhill at 5000 feet elevation is not a easy as you might think. 

I worked hard for my PR!

  1. Loving your vacation photos! Congrats on another half marathon finish and state #15! I’ve always heard that running downhill, while it sounds easy, is not! I actually don’t like running downhill because it kills my quads.

    1. I LOVE running downhill. 😊 I had heard that about the quads, but thankfully mine were fine. It wasn’t completely downhill. There were some flat stretches & a few little uphills, too, but most of it was downhill.


  2. Sounds like this was a tough race, downhill and all! When I ran Big Sur, I had a lot more trouble with the downhills than the uphills. Who would have thought?

      I’ve always loved running downhill & at least this time that didn’t bother me-I have a similar race in the fall, minus the elevation.

      And I think the elevation was the hardest factor.


  3. You photos bring back memories. Congrats on the PR. Not surprised. You work hard and deserve it.

    I guess you mean Wineglass is downhill. I’ve never heard it advertised that way. I just heard that it was pretty and flat. Not a goal race for me. Too hard to do long runs and boat. I am thrilled with my recent PR at age 64. That’ll keep me happy for awhile. I’d like to get faster at the 5k now.

      1. I do but I’m in a runt. My times are all 27:xx. I should probably do some speed drills but I’m too lazy and tired from traveling/working

    All the hikes, gosh the views are simply breathtaking! Sounds like you really made the most of your trip to Utah!!!

      1. It’s why I’m doing 50 states. Not to just tick them off, but to see more of the country! And sometimes it takes me to places I never thought of going to.

  5. The scenery is truly amazing!
    The cold did not last, huh? I am glad you had a great race!
    I love downhill running but not on a super steep grade of course…the pics I’ve seen so far from recaps truly looked like a treat 🙂
    That is great you got so much hiking and really got to enjoy the moments!

  6. I am super happy for you and that PR! You did work hard and no one deserves it more! That course was definitely not easy and those last 6 FLAT miles killed me and my time….still a little sore today from it.

    So glad to finally meet you and hope to meet up again when we have more time to visit! 🙂

      1. Interesting. They say the downhill is hard on the quads, which was why that one week my hamstring was bothering me was weird.

        It’s always something, that’s for sure! How does Major Hubs feel?


      2. That’s exactly what I thought …quads. But my quads were not sore at all, yet my hammies and glutes were. Weird.

        Major Hubs feels fine. We both wore compression sleeves for the flight home to ward off calf soreness.

  7. I’ve been to both Zion and Bryce Canyon and loved them both! I love Utah in general and would have loved to do this race, but the timing didn’t work out. Congrats!

  8. It was so great to meet you in person! So glad you were able to get out and see different parts of Utah, we have such a diverse state there is something new every few miles, LOL
    Your pics of Bryce have me excited for my own hiking plans there in a few days!

    1. It was my first time to UT — so much to see! So much we didn’t see! I don’t know if we’ll ever make it back, but there are definitely things I’d still love to do there.

      Enjoy Bryce & thanks again for fishing my sunglasses out! That was really a big help.
