“Powering” Through: 2/25-3/3 WRD

Without a goal race on the calendar and bitter cold and snow and wind, I can’t say I’m super motivated to run. I want to maintain my base, so after a short runbbatical, it was time to lace up . . . a little.

I’ve been active in other ways. On Monday we lost power for 5 hours (extreme wind). Luckily we have a generator, but it doesn’t power everything. It is not easy getting in 5 miles pacing around your house, but I was successful. With some warming temps, some short runs, and some dogwalks, it was a whole lot easier to get in more steps later in the week.

Running Updates

It’s a big job! Had to do it early so I could get out to a meeting.

Thursday
I can’t say as I was raring to go, especially not after shoveling the driveway which takes quite a while and includes paths in the back for the dogs, but I must say 2 miles on a treadmill seems like almost the perfect amount of time.

Friday
Did you notice the dogs finally got a walk? Probably the only one for this week. It’s been that cold, and up until yesterday, that windy too (or windy & snowy). They think they want to walk, but I know they wouldn’t be happy walking in 9 feels like -3.

The only reason I didn’t run outside today was I just didn’t want to feel cold. Seriously, by the afternoon it was actually fairly warm — 30 feels really warm after the weather earlier in the week! It just seemed too much effort to suit up for just 2 miles.

It’s always satisfying to see the results of your hard work

Sunday
Finally a “warm” and sunny day. I set out to do somewhere between 4-5 miles. The first mile was slooooooow. I didn’t have a goal for the run, though, so mentally shrugged my shoulders. The next 4 were a normal pace. I was tempted to do just do 4, but there will probably be a 5 mile race in a month, so I figured it’s time to get some miles on the legs again.

Someone was very happy to see “Daddy”. Until she wanted dinner, of course, then it’s all Mommy!

Favorites of the week
Got together with Running Buddy D for lunch — it’s been a couple of months since we caught up. I miss running with her, but she has some exciting plans that I’m sure I’ll get to hear all about the next time we get together.

Very glad we got the starter on the generator got fixed, otherwise it would’ve gotten pretty chilly in here on Monday (and last night, as it turned out)! Also glad the power came back on before I went to bed both times, as the generator is below our bedroom and quite loud.

Happy that Mr. Judy is back home from a week of travels. I don’t like to announce when I’m on my own here on the blog — do you think Lola was also happy to have him home?

Talk to me:

What was a favorite from your week?

Have you tried anything new recently?

Have you had the same group of running buddies for a long time, or does the cast of characters change?

  1. I had a runbattical as well this week (only ran Fri & Sunday) but not because I wanted to.

My favorite of the week was Cat Yoga.

I wore new running shoes today on my run.

    1. I’m sure the cat yoga had to be fun. I used to do that on my own (and dog yoga) at home . . . Thursday was a super busy day for me, though, and I never even turned my computer on at all.

It’s sounds as if the runbattical will do you go — I know you hate it but it sounds like your body needs that TLC.

I have very tight ankles too. Which is often connected to tight calves. I never knew that until I got that ankle pain a few years back — always something.

You may have to keep going to a PT in the back of your mind if things don’t resolve.

      1. I’ll let you know about cat yoga if you are interested. It sold out right away.

My chiro is going to refer me to PT if she can’t fix me. So far she is hopeful.

  2. I long for a warm and sunny day when I don’t have to work! Tuesday was pretty nice here, and I did get out for lunch, but I think we’re overdue for a nice weekend. I think one reason I am dedicated to my long runs (when I’m not injured) is that they make it worth the hassle of getting bundled up. Scooby gets impatient with all the layering I have to do before our walks.

    1. Well, warm is a relative thing up here. After a couple of months of winter 30 suddenly seems warm! And we don’t get a lot of sun, either. But I am blessed to be not working.

Now imagine you’ve got 2 dogs waiting on you, and both of those dogs also need to be gotten into coats (which they dislike intensely)!

  3. Well, you’ve heard me talk of Barb. She’s may main local running buddy, but she’s not been able to run for the past month or so…so I’ve been running solo. Which would have probably happened anyways because it’s been too cold to run outside much in the past 5-6 weeks. Max practically took ME for a walk over lunch almost every day last week, though. Finally, it was warm enough (and not slushy and messy) so he could get in some walking. He’s not used to just doing the backyard “business loop” LOL Thanks so much for linking with us, Judy! Glad you’re here 😉

    1. I did get to walk the dogs more than I expected last week. But now we have fresh snow and probably a little dip into the polar vortex again.

Oddly enough, they slept later on the days they didn’t walk, the last few days they’ve been getting up early for their first trip outside. Weird.

  4. Runbbatical. I like that. Glad you & the furballs were OK without power
I saw a friend I made through running group last night for the first time in a few months. She’s not running any longer (had a goal race and is done), but we were with a mutual friend and it was funny how the conversation kept coming back to running. I met her through running but we’ve realized we have a lot else in common

    1. I don’t usually share when we’re traveling on the blog, either, but then again the info on the goal race is shared on there (but who remembers it anyway except me).

I tend not to post to FB during either, but I do tend to post to IG. A little bipolar. 🙂

  5. Yes, I don’t share when I’m alone and esp not on holiday, although I usually schedule or post blog posts to look like I’m still there!!

All that snow still, I was telling my group on Saturday as we ran around in our tshirts!

And yes, we have a core of running buddies, some have dropped off and we have added a few new ones. it’s hardly ever ALL of us (there were a lot on Saturday) but I love how we all go out in different combinations!

    1. I usually have blogs schedule to go when I’m away, too. It does mean a lot of work beforehand, but it’s worth it to me.

We got more fresh snow last night. It really isn’t at all abnormal for us. I think people got spoiled because a few years back we had especially mild winters — which is not normal for us.

  6. Wait, I thought the point of a generator was to power things up when the actual power goes out?

I don’t have “official” running buddies since I run alone. However, I have run with a group and have enjoyed it.

    1. Full house generators can be very expensive (or require a lot of rewiring). You can get one that does it. Our powers our heat (but not the AC), the microwave (but not the stove), the fridge, the freezer in our garage, the computer (yipee!), most of the lights downstairs, some of the lights upstairs (but not the bathroom or bedroom).

I do enjoy running in a group and for a while I had friends who were evenly paced with me, but right now I’m looking again.

  7. We have a snowblower but I find something oddly satisfying about shoveling the driveway.

I’ve got Steph as my local running buddy and of course, I have Holly for my racecations. It’s nice to have run buddies, isn’t it?

  8. glad you were able to get out a bit at some point but dang that weather… I just don’t know how you all deal with it!!

A favorite from my week I dare to say was the two days of pretty amazing sunshine we had. The two warmest days the Netherlands has *ever* experienced. Sure it felt great but bad news for global warming. February should be cold, windy and rainy. And as luck had it, it changed to that on Saturday and has stayed that way since.

The only new thing I tried last week was the fresh fish cafe that I went to lunch to with my colleagues. ha!

I have in general the same group of running friends. I was running quite a lot with my friend Gerrit but his passion hobby is making and decorating cakes. Oh and dressing in drag is his new thing now too. So he’s not running much, though he has serious calf muscles from wearing heels! I also used to run with Kim who is now pregnant and not running. I’ve run a few times with Marga my neighbor and Gon another friend I know from running. Since I am in a running club and a training club it all seems to be the same people. Oh and how could I forget running with Vincent. It’s so funny; people who don’t know us very well think that HE is my husband. Which makes me LOL!! I mean I like Vincent but believe me, not my romantic type.

  9. Ugh, snow again!

We are supposed to be getting a c”old snap” this week. We will see temps back in the 40s. I’m hoping it holds out until our big race this weekend.

My running buddy is generally the same. She lives close and has the same early bird tendencies as me. So it works out.

    1. 40s for your race would be awesome! I was bummed that the weather warmed in Savannah, but it is what it is (actually, I would have been fine with it after the race!).’

It’s wonderful to have a running buddy close!
