Ticking Time Bomb: 6/19 – 25 WRD

It was all about the ticks this week. We did everything right: long pants tucked into socks, I was also wearing a jacket with tight wrists, using repellent, checking ourselves before getting in the car. Yet as I was going to bed on Sunday I found a tick attached to my underarm. Yuck & creepy! In fact, as I was putting on hiking boots to drive home the next day, I found another one running all over on the boots. I decided it was a sign and just drove home — it was already getting a bit later than I’d anticipated anyway.

Is this where the tick attacked me? Why is it you can sure feel them pulling them out but you don’t feel their bite? Helps them survive, I guess.

Mr. Judy had an outing the next day. He took the same precautions (except the jacket). That night he found a tick on the couch, but thankfully not attached to anyone.

Hmm, maybe it’s time to watch “Tick, Tick, Boom!” again. Love that movie!

Running Update

Grateful for a mostly shaded path

Thursday intention: go long-er
It may have been slow, but this run was just what I needed. We’re supposed to get very humid towards the weekend, but it was nice and cool even though I got out a bit later than I wanted to (what else is new?). The trail was almost completely in shade. I needed this! I was pretty sure I’d be on the mill on Sunday.

Forgot to take a photo today. So this bunny (who almost looks like a fawn in this photo) was in the kennel one morning when I let Bandit out. Bandit never noticed him, not even when the bunny ran around & out the open door and across the lawn (we close the door when we’re gone a long time so Bandit has access to outdoors but not the whole lawn).

Friday intention: recover
it’s amazing how hard 1 mile can feel sometimes, even if it was faster than most of my runs lately. Because, no walk breaks. Grateful the humidity hadn’t yet moved in.

Sunday intention: exercise the heart
Bandit was more off than usual this morning, not wanting the usual treats we bury his meds in and not wanting to walk, although we were out pretty early. Eventually we got the meds & some real food in him but it was almost 9 am by that point. Thus treadmill run also felt hard, but I got it done.

The new bed is now referred to as the feeding bed. Because Bandit stopped eating in his crate when he got so sick. Although we spend a lot of time just following him around, trying to get him to eat. He wasn’t like this before we started the heart meds. 😦

Favorites of the week
Technically last week but I really enjoyed my stop at Overmountain Conservation Area last week — right up until I found that tick. So far, so good (it’s been a week). Or, “it’s been a week”, as in there’s been a lot going on. I remind myself often to lean into gratitude for all I have; so easy to fall into the victim mindset and I do at times. Then I remember how priveleged I truly am. Plus the cough is quiet for now so sleep has been better for us all.

ICYMI: Welcome Summer with plenty of heart opening. My upper body definitely felt more easeful after this practice. I also led a Summer Solstice practice in my FB group — the replay is available in the group, which you can join here. If you’ve got just a little more time, try this Yin Yoga Hips at the Wall practice here.

Coming up next Week: Running may be minimal, but I can almost always scare up a few runfessions.

  1. My cat is usually full of ticks but this year… none!

But yes they are creepy. I guess I’ve been lucky. Knock on wood. I use DEET repellent but it’s too hot for jackets and long pants in the summer.

Now mosquito bites, that’s a different story.

I am so used to walk breaks that one mile would probably feel hard. I see no reason not to walk.

Happy to hear that Bandit has stopped coughing and you can sleep and do all your runs (though I see rain in the forecast forever…)

  2. That is a beautiful place aside from the tic. Funny, I almost named my post ticking time bomb but for very different reasons. It sure felt like summer this weekend after a much cooler June. Hope you all have a better week ahead

  3. We had some serious heat last week. It got humid on a few of those days, but also was rather pleasant on others. Looks like we have another warm week ahead as well, but with some rain (fingers crossed, because we really need rain!). Yuck on the ticks!

  4. It is a bad year for ticks but I guess either I’ve been lucky or my repellent is working really well! I use Sawyer picaridin spray–I stopped using DEET because it doesn’t repel biting flies. They are really bad in Wisconsin. I have to cover my hair too.

  5. I think ticks are one of the most creepy things ever. Glad you found yours relatively early on and got rid of it.

We had a lot of rain last week and it’s in the forecast for this coming week, too. Somehow we lucked out and had to beautiful days over the weekend, albeit hotter than we’ve had so far this summer.

  6. Sorry about the ticks. They are gross. It’s been so dry here, knock wood, they’re not too bad right now, although they were a definite problem in spring. Poor Bandit. It’s tough getting them to eat when they don’t want to.

  7. We definitely have to watch for ticks with Scooby. Although we don’t let him run free in the yard too much, he definitely gets into grass and shrubs on his walks.

I hope Bandit has a good week.

  8. Eek! Ticks! They freak me out – luckily I don’t usually have to deal with them (no trail running, no pets), but it’s something I am always aware of.

You did what you can this week – that’s all anybody can ever ask!

    1. I tried to get my mom’s aide to help (it was on an awkward position) but she just looked at me like a deer in headlights. Luckily I happened to have tweezers on me; I don’t usually!

  9. I have heard from a few of my friends that the tick situation seems worse this year than last year. Thank goodness you saw the ticks and were able to remove them!

Hope that Bandit regains his appetite and starts to feel better.

  10. Yuck, ticks. That’s partly why I didn’t run in the forest when I was in Central Florida. I did do a trail run though, and checked for ticks afterwards. It’s not something I usually think about, but I will be more aware of it from now on.
Glad to hear Bandit and you guys are sleeping better- I hope that lasts.
The photo of Overmountain is beautiful!

    1. Overmountain was some very nice views with lots of walking in fields with mown paths. I’ve definitely hiked in worse places (with less clothes on) & this was the first time I’ve picked up a passenger. 😦

  11. ticks are so gross to me but I’ve never actually seen one up close. My best friend in Portland has lyme disease from a tick 😦

thinking about you all, especially Bandit, that he feels better soon.

and I agree – sometimes even 1 mile can feel extremely hard especially in yuck humid weather.

    1. Lyme disease is no joke. 😦 Hugs to your friend.

Bandit’s having a better. But it’s back & forth, there’s no getting better; there’s just the hope the good days are more numerous than the bad.

  12. I’ve been pleasantly surprised that London doesn’t seem to have quite the same issue with ticks…Minnesota definitely did and I am not a fan!

Thinking of little Bandit and wishing for the best Judy.
