Brighter Days: 7/10 – 16 WRD

Well, the weather continues to be mostly wet, hot, or humid — or all three, so that’s not so much brighter. But Bandit continues to improve, even going into his crate of his own volition to eat again towards the end of the week.

I’m joining Kim @ Kimrunsonthefly and Deborah @ Confessionsofamotherrunner and yeah, I managed all my runs outside again.

Running Update

Pretty flowers

Monday intention: add a *little* speed
Okay, I didn’t plan on speedwork, but I realized I didn’t have to slog as much if I added on some strides at the end. It was cooler, but still oh so humid and I was tired this day.

More pretty flowers

Wednesday intention: try to beat the heat
This was probably the earliest I’ve gotten out yet, but it was still hot. Not quite as humid. I ran a route with sort of rolling hills — still cut out the steeper hill at the end. I actually ran around a parking lot once, considered another loop — I literally had 1/4 mile left. Nope, paused my Garmin, walked up the hill, then finished off on the kinder rolling hills in my neighborhood.

Reflections

Friday intention: just run
We had some violent thunderstorms during the night and in the morning, but they helped to wash the humidity out. I got out a bit later than planned, but I guess due to the lower humidity I had a decent pace for this run. Don’t worry, the humidity came back in later and for the weekend, but I’m done with my running for this week!

Just slightly more flattering than the selfie I took with Bandit last week. He almost always comes over when I’m doing these stretches post run.

Favorites of the week
We needed to refill Bandit’s heart meds, which required a recheck at the vet (although they did not tell us this in advance).

He is always happy to go into the vet (lots of treats). But not too happy with the wait to be seen. Me neither, Bandit.

Anyway, I think the vet was impressed. Despite those 2 weeks where he would barely eat, he’s gained almost a pound! It may be time to go back to two meals a day, LOL! We have almost weaned him off of the codeine.

Grateful for the shade — and a bit of Turkey from my sandwich & some ice cream

He also had his first real outing since all this began — after the appointment we went out for lunch & ice cream. Thankfully there was a picnic table with plenty of shade. A very hot day but he did okay! I think about a local getaway (I’d been planning one), but a) his meds are expensive and b) I know things can change on a dime with this disease.

I was finally able to meet up with a friend to walk, and saw a few of the others in our running group after they finished their race. Not a bit of FOMO on a very humid Saturday!

Definitely not a favorite: while I was out, Mr. Judy tried to mowed the lawn. I say try because he ran into a wasp nest on the ground and got stung about four times. Poor guy; luckily he’s not allergic. He even finished it up later in the afternoon! When really motivated he’s a trooper, you couldn’t pay me to go anywhere near that lawn now!

ICYMI: I want weak hips & glutes. Said no runner ever — click here for the video (live at 8 am). I am releasing a PDF with 5 Yin Yoga Poses to help with stress in Summer to those who want it in my FB group, which you can join here.

Coming up next Week: Probably back to just WRD (plus back to my moms). But my Vivoactive 4 has arrived — although too late for a run.

  1. Glad to hear Bandit is doing better.

Our weather seems to be in repeat. Hot humid chance of thunderstorms.

Makes runs tricky to schedule. And yes the earlier the better. The race was humid but I always enjoy a challenge. At least after. Lol.

  2. I’m so happy to hear that Bandit is feeling better and hope his meds help him continue to feel well.

Those flowers are pretty! The siding on the house in the second picture is very cool – I’ve never seen anything like that.

  3. Ugh on the wasp nest and stings. Even one can be bad! I hope the Mr. is doing ok.

So glad Bandit is doing better. Our vet still lets us wait in the car (started during covid times) which is a bit better for Scooby than sitting in a waiting room with cats and dogs!

    1. Mr. Judy seems to be okay. I know if it’d been me, I’d still be suffering — so that’s good (in a sense).

Bandit doesn’t mind being in the lobby (which is often empty). But none of us are happy with the long wait in the treatment room. Even before the Pandemic it’s always been this way.

  4. We had plenty of humidity, as well, this week. It does make it tougher to get the runs (and even some of the walks) done. I’m grateful for my bike(s) this time of year!

  5. Wow, poor Mr. Judy! Wasp stings HURT, and I can’t imagine getting four of them at once. Ouch.
But glad to hear Bandit is doing better! He looks healthy and happy.
Sounds like you had three solid runs, and I LOVE the photo with those purple flowers!

    1. The wasp stings, while definitely painful, didn’t seem to bother my husband as much as me — a few years back unknown to us they nested on the back of her mailbox. I got stung several times over several days before I realized what was going on. I swear it hurt forever!

I said this morning they’re like fire ants. It’s one of the things I asked everyone in NC (whether they had fire ants & the answer is no).

  6. Bandit looks like he’s smiling in that picture–or is he just begging for treats? We took Cocoa to lunch with us in Madison on our way home today. She wouldn’t eat the ‘pup cup’ they gave her but she eagerly took chicken from my salad.

Ouch to the wasp bites. They are mean little a**holes, and I say that from experience. I hope Mr Judy is ok. We saw some flying out of our deck and Mike took care of that in a hurry. I always wonder-like I do with skunks-what is their actual purpose?

    1. Apparently the wasps do some pollinating. Mr. Judy is surprisingly ok. I’d be sore for days, but I’m happy it hasn’t been that bad for him. I think it was initially but alas for him I wasn’t home!

I think Bandit was just panting. It was a pretty hot day. He loves ice cream & it’s the first we’ve gotten this summer!

  7. so so happy Bandit is feeling better these days! your garmin pause to walk to more kinder hills sounds like something I would do haha! Hey, if I’m out here looking for joy and pleasure in my workout it’s going to sometimes be that way! Poor Mr Judy – no way would I ever mow the lawn again!!

    1. I already don’t mow lawns but yeah, after that no way. But he knew where the nest was now.

If I were training for something I might suck it up & run up the hill. Most runs have been hot & humid lately & I don’t feel the need for extra challenges in my life!

  8. Oooh, I hate wasps.

I’m so glad to hear that Bandit is doing better and eating. I know you can’t let your guard down, but I”m sure it’s a relief to have a little normalcy with that sweet guy.
