It was a stressful week with a couple of appointments for Bandit and a visit to my mom, but it ended on a high note for Bandit. The 4 day heatwave wasn’t fun, but we made it through. I don’t want my Summer back, but Fall is definitely welcome!

I’m joining Kim @ Kimrunsonthefly and Deborah @ Confessionsofamotherrunner and a pretty strong week of running, even if there wasn’t that much. We do what we can.

Running Update

Monday intention: remind the feet to go faster
It’s really not so much about going faster, but a shorter run and then fast intervals. Which apparently have been getting a teensy bit faster each week. Another good run; Mr. Judy actually had to be somewhere and it was warmer, so I really wanted to try to get out there earlier.

I actually think I was wise to skip that third run last week — now we’ll see how the rest of the week goes with temps in the 90sF for the next few days.

Wednesday intention: beat the heat
Yes, yes I did beat the heat. I was on the go by 6:40 am. In years past I’ve often started much earlier than that, but there are things to juggle in the morning now (Bandit, I’m looking at you) and quite frankly I prioritize sleep more. Ok, it wasn’t exactly cool. Not sure if the temp recorded on Garmin Connect is the start or end of my activity — but it was 74F. Getting out early meant I mostly had shade and/or cloud cover.

I decided on the run to go 4 miles. I feel no need to push myself right now, but I knew today was a good day to go a little longer — plus we had Bandit’s cardiologist appointment in the afternoon, so a bit more stress relief wasn’t a bad idea. I also tackled the hilly route. Yes, I walked up the largest hills while my Garmin was paused, #sorrynotsorry. There was still some hills. There was some exploring with the Garmin paused, too — also not sorry about that.

The result was a pretty strong run (ahem, with some long walking breaks) and sort of negative splits (the last 2 miles were virtually the same pace). Now if you could just pause your watch to walk whenever you want during a race I’d be golden, LOL!

Friday intention: maintain
The heatwave finally broke, but I still got out early because in the low 70sF even at 6:40ish.

I think this was negative splits; mile 2 isn’t correct because I forgot to pause my watch while taking photos. Very happy with the pace of the last mile — no doubt the lower humidity helped!

I really thought about making this one 4 miles, too, but it’s been a stressful week and tomorrow (going to my moms) will add a bit more stress too. A week with a heatwave is not the week to push!

Favorites of the week
Let’s lead with Bandit. We got amazingly lucky and were able to fill a cancellation at the cardiologist’s — with my cardiologist of choice. Yes, all my dogs have seen the same cardiologist! His assistant even remembered Chester vaguely, and that was almost 8 years ago.
Long story short, doc thinks the heart failure is only in the beginning stages and took him off one of the heart meds he’s on (of course we just got a refill), keeping him on the other. He also thinks the coughing is basically some bronchial thing — not related to his heart — we had already restarted him on the hydrocodeine for the cough, and now he’s on 3 weeks of antibiotics. Fingers crossed whatever it is goes away permanently!
There’s still some suspicion that something could be going on with his liver, and I’m trying to schedule an appointment for that. Always something.
Although going to my mom’s is always stressful, it’s easier when the family is all there. Plus I got to see one nephew & one niece, also always nice. I went alone because I knew it was probably the lesser of two evils to leave Bandit at home — the heat stresses him and he’s stressed when I’m not there.

Coming up next Week: Just WRD. Plus Happy New Year (the Jewish New Year, but no post about that).
Such wonderful news about Bandit! I hope the suspicion that there’s something going on with his liver isn’t serious, but at least you’re getting that checked out.
I love the picture you captured of the cloud reflection in the rain puddle!

We also experienced that heat wave last week. It was awful! I agree totally that it was not the time to push when it came to running. Hopefully that will be our last of the oppressively hot days for this summer, although we may have one or two more hot days this month. We don’t really get fall temps until October.
All the best for Bandit. It sounds like he’s in good hands with his vet.

Yes, it’s still humid here but a tad cooler & looks to be more Fall like bumpy the weekend. Feeling better about Bandit although he’s still not quite himself.

Looks like a good week for you with some good runs & strength workouts. The morning light in those photos is so pleasant, and I love that photo with the reflection in the puddle, well captured!! That sounds like good news about Bandit!! I wish you the best regarding the liver.

Thank you, Susanne. Now if that darn cough would go away . . .
The light was amazing earlier. But tomorrow is cooler and potentially rainy so I’ll wait a bit, LOL!

First of all- your photos are beautiful. The one with the tree reflected in a puddle is a work of art. Second- hot weather is just stressful. The heat makes everything harder! I hope you get a break in it soon. And I’m glad Bandit is doing well! That’s some good news. Good luck with the mom visit!

My visit to my mom was yesterday. The normal stress, but with most of the family there that makes it more pleasant.
Thanks — the light was just so great in the mornings when I managed to get myself out there earlier. But yes, heat is very stressful for me. Not everyone feels it the same way, but it really takes a lot out of me.

Your photos are really pretty this week! It was much hotter up in Lenox than we expected too and big storms at night. Glad to read that Bandit is doing much better 🙂

Yup, you just described our weather (but expected).
My photos were better because I was out earlier & had better light, LOL! The things we do to beat the heat!

Glad to hear you got good news about Bandit… Hope he continues to feel better.
As much as running in the heat is hard, IU hate the decreasing daylight. It is making it almost impossible to get my run in before work. Sunrise isn’t until 6:30ish. Ans soon it will be dark after dark… sigh.
LOL on pausing the watch so your pace is faster. We never do when we walk up hills or take photos… You can’t in a race !! I’m all about the distance not speed.

If I’m training for something I probably wouldn’t pause my watch but I’m not. Doesn’t matter.
Can’t change the length of the days unless you move, so you just have to get those knuckle lights back out (I don’t have any).

Beautiful photos! We are having our heat wave here – even up to the 90s. I had a good run on Thursday but didn’t go out this morning after such a poor, hot night. I think I did the right thing. Best of luck to Bandit on the new meds regime.

I’m sorry about your heatwave — we’re more used to that than you are, but still, for up here, nice summers are supposed to be our reward for winter! Not this year.

That’s great news about Bandit! One less thing to stress about. We’re weaning Cocoa off the steroids as we speak. She’s been doing really well–she can hear now–but she’s been a little kooky. Plus she’s peeing in the house–it’s a side effect. At least it’s on the rug by the front door!

That’s great about Cocoa’s hearing!
Ugh on the steroid induced peeing. Steroids were mentioned as a possibility. Our downstairs is carpeted. Not to mention he takes his own sweet time these days. Fingers crossed it doesn’t come to that.
Bandit’s always been a little kooky! 🤣

That is such wonderful news about Bandit! Hopefully that will lighten the stress load a bit. Seems like we’ve all been dealing with insane weather! We had heat early in the week, then a major plummet…and today, it got warm and humid again.

It’s cool-er but still in the 60s in the morning here.
