It’s weather stalking time: TOLT

My thoughts are all over the place, but that’s what Thinking Out Loud  is all about anyway: weather stalking, swimming ballet buns, tough bodyweight exercises. Don’t know what I’m talking about? Read on!

It’s that time again
Let the weather stalking commence. Doesn’t matter that my half is more than two weeks away; I have to start thinking about what to pack. So I added Scottsdale to my weather app today.

Lows in the mid 60s. Geez, right now we’re just barely out of the 60s for a high!

Of course, I knew that it would be hot, just as I knew it was unlikely to be hot here. I will have a little time to acclimate to the heat but not enough. Not nearly enough.

Hopefully I’ve gained a little wisdom from all those halfs I’ve run, and will just accept that this race is very unlikely to be a PR and dial back my finish time (and pace) expectations.

Sometimes you wonder why you train so hard, though . . . .

I thought I had it figured out
My nails. Nail polish remover seems to just destroy them. Is it just me? After a few times wearing polish, my nails become incredibly brittle and start breaking easily. They’re very strong if I never wear any polish.

I got some nail polish remover with no acetone. Maybe it’s just not the one. Seemed better the first time, but after I removed polish the second time, yup, my nails got all ridged and brittle again. Sigh.

What I’m loving lately
Being able to walk the dogs later in the day. While I don’t like the short days — and mostly I’ve been too busy to even really notice them — I do like the fact that I don’t have to walk them almost as soon as I get up anymore.

Yesterday I went to put my hair into a ponytail for swimming, only it got kind of halfway stuck the last time, creating more of a ballet bun. I think I like that better — I think my hair stayed dryer; a happy accident. Maybe I’ll be able to swim a little bit longer into the cooler weather, which would be nice.

I spent more than half of September away from home
Most of it not in a good way, if you follow my weekly wraps.

The only good thing was that with all that back and forth, I almost always had toiletries, tea, and snacks ready to go.

Let’s just not mention the number of things I kept forgetting or misplacing (house keys, anyone? Nah, who needs those?).

Who knew 16 minutes could be so hard?

Bodyweight exercises can be tough!
I am always surprised how sore you can get without ever picking up a weight.

I am currently doing the #purelytwinsfitnesss #PT16x16 challenge. Mostly bodyweight exercises for just 16 minutes . . . and my butt is totally feeling it. Check it out — Purely Twins 16×16 Challenge — it’s free!

They were doing so well together

Bandit update
So yeah, now I’m on dog walking duty again, as in walking both dogs at once. Bandit’s loose leash walking isn’t really quite up to that yet, but we did get a Petsafe Easy Walk harness (Affiliate link) for Bandit; no not the one in purple, although I do love purple.

Apparently I’m supposed to be teaching him to heel, but I’ve really never tried for that with my dogs. As long as they’re not pulling, I’m happy. It’s kind of a pain with little dogs, though, because if the leash gets too low, then it gets under their legs instead of along their sides.

Lola seems to have gotten the feel for the hands free leash, so I don’t always have to hold it for her.

Unfortunately, last night Lola came up to Bandit as he was laying in his bed next to the couch and he snapped at her. Sigh. They’ve been doing so well together. It’s why I remind Mr. Judy over and over that while no, he’s not the devil, he still does have issues. This morning I told him that while I hope he continues to improve so that he can be fully integrated into our lives, he has to accept that it’s also possible this may be as good as it gets.

I definitely hope I’m wrong on that!

Talk to me. Tell me in the comments:

Am I the only one that can’t seem to wear polish without destroying my nails?

Any upcoming racecations?

Do you do something different with your hair when you swim?

I’m linking up with Amanda at Running with Spoons for her:

  1. Agreed about the nail polish, but my nails recover in about 2 weeks. Lots of hand cream helps! I’m not allowed finger nail polish at work (I’m a surgeon) so it’s only high days and holidays for me and I usually keep them short too. But some times I go the whole hog on my toes- gel nails & the works!!

      1. Good question. Infection control/ uniform policy. Allegedly you can get little pockets under the nail polish where germs hide….. On tho bright side I get to wear a hat on bad hair days😊

      2. My hair is pretty scary of several back to back days of running right now . . . getting it cut tomorrow afternoon, so no reason to wash it, but let’s just say it’s a real frizzy mess!

Interesting about the polish. I would never have though about it!

  2. That’s why I get my nails done (ANC). I don’t have to worry and they look good for about a month (if you do a French manicure). I do my own toes and always have them polished.

Arizona – I know someone who was just there- 90s but it’s a dry heat. I remember being in Palm Springs in Oct. when it was over 100 and it didn’t feel as bad as 80s and humid here. Just as you said, don’t expect a fast finish and enjoy the experience.

Hope to see you in person someday.

  3. I don’t wear finger nail polish…too many organic solvents in the lab. I do my toes every once in a while, though. I am not a swimmer.
I do hope that Bandit continues to improve….for the sake of your entire family. ❤

  4. I don’t wear nail polish on my fingernails–I wash my hands over 100 times/day (and that is not an exaggeration nor do I have OCD, it’s all in a day’s work) and the polish would last for maybe a day. I do love pedicures, tho! Hoping to get one today.

Cocoa is at the groomer today. I’m struggling with her too. She’s really bad. And I’m not very firm. I need to man up, I guess…

    1. I am very firm. But I don’t always do the right thing, either. And Mr. Judy is much softer than me, plus doesn’t always remember that training doesn’t stop after the first month . . .

Seriously, you still have time with Cocoa, she’s young! I’m fighting a much harder battle with Bandit considering he’s a senior dog.

  5. I never polish my nails, I will wear polish on my toes but never my hand. I have to wash my hands too much all day so no point…
    and I don’t swim lol
I have not even had a run in anything but upper 60’s or 70’s yet and always humid. It is really that cold there?? I think it will feel better even if it warm in Az, since the dew point usually stays below 60. AZ even if they have a little humidity isn’t doesn’t usually read that way. Hopefully you have an early race start!

    1. Yes, fall moved in a major way this week. I need to get in a run this afternoon and it’s still pretty chilly actually!

The dryness in AZ will help, but hot is hot. And relative. I’m kind of hoping for a cold snap just on race day. 🙂

And yes, the race does start early!

  6. I usually put a strengthener on my nails… have never had issues with them being brittle, except when I use semi permeant polishes / gels… which is why I only use them a couple times a year.

Sounds like things with Bandit are definitely better.

    1. Well, not so much better with him snapping at Lola. 😦

I used to think it was the polish, but I’ve had the same problem with several different polishes.

Then I thought it was the remover. I still think that might be it, but haven’t yet gotten to the bottom of it!

      Unpolished they’re pretty strong.

  7. I wonder though, and I could be wrong…but don’t dogs, like people, sometimes just have an off day or moment? Maybe Bandit was just having a moment….but it sounds like he’s progressing well, even if slower than you had hoped.
I get no chip manicures, because working in a hospital I wash my hands SOOO much that the regular polish chips off within hours.

    1. Oh sure, animals are like us, of course they can have a bad day. My problem is that every time he resorts to that sort of behavior, it’s self rewarding. So the real aim is to avoid it!

And I’m not saying Chester and Lola never snapped at each other — it happened. But I knew them & trusted them & knew it was unlikely to be a problem, as indeed it never was. But if they have teeth . . . they can bite.

  8. Hydration may be the key at your race since it will be so dry. By the time you feel thirsty, it will be too late. I have terrible nails, so I can’t give you any good advice. My hairdresser told me you either have fast growing hair or nails. Mine is hair.

  9. Aww, dang, I missed this last night and didn’t realize Bandit had snapped at Lola. He definitely wants to be the alpha male, doesn’t he.

I have that problem with nail polish and remover as well. If you find a solution, let me know. And while professional manicures are great for the cuticles, I’m not so sure they’re good for the nail itself. Do you think dry nails is one of those things that just happen when we grow older?

    1. I really don’t think the nails have anything to do with aging — if I just leave them be, they’re fine. But I feel pretty when they’re polished!

Ah well right now they’re recovering.

Oh yes, Bandit is definitely an alpha. Although we’re still figuring each other out.

  10. I love the look of nail polish but manicures/pedicures are just too costly and I don’t have the patience or knack to do it myself. Plus I get aggravated trying to keep them looking nice when I’m up to my elbows in stuff. So I just chop them down with a nail slipper and call it a day.

Wishing you another step forward on the Bandit wagon.

    1. I actually enjoy manicures, but rarely spring for them, and I actually didn’t feel the last one did a great job. I don’t mind doing it myself, but I hate the fact that after a month my nails are so brittle. 😦
