Hamilton Touring: 7/13 – 19 WRD

We got even further out of our neighborhood this week with a small day trip. The dogs and I enjoyed it, anyway. Mr. Judy enjoyed the ice cream.

Running Update

#allthebugs

Monday: intention — attention to breath & foot turnover
Well, that was the intention. Except it was so buggy that this short run was actually torturous. The upside was that I ran faster trying to get it over. The downside is I can’t easily run that pace using nasal breathing — but you do what you gotta do.

I ate my post run snack (which was basically breakfast) outside afterward, but because of the bugs, it just wasn’t pleasant.

He tried to blend into the tree

Wednesday: pick it up + breath attention (always)
I worried that I got out too late & would need the cooling towel I didn’t take. I knew it was cooler — but how long would the sun stay hidden? Thankfully the entire run. This was the nicest day I’ve had to run in a month!

I took advantage of that to consciously pick up the pace. It was still slow, of course, but a steady first two miles and slightly faster the last mile. I had to breath through my mouth on some of my walk breaks & my V02 Max remains stuck, but I’m ok with both!

This guy stayed put as I ran past him twice, and I swear he was still in the same place when I walked the dogs this morning!

Saturday: intention — time on my feet, taking it easy
Friday was so nice and cool (mid 60s — I actually wore a hoodie to walk the dogs), I wished I’d felt up to running Friday morning. I haven’t been sleeping great for a few weeks — due to heat & dogs — and I knew I was better served by a rest day.

It wasn’t really quite that hot — but it felt like it was!

Saturday was relentlessly sunny, but thankfully the humidity hadn’t been turned on yet, and I chose a route that had a fair amount of shade. This was a surprisingly strong run, relatively steady, with the last mile being the fastest.

I took it relatively easy because of the heat and sun, but while certainly not fast, it was quite a bit faster than most of my long runs have been recently — despite more walk breaks when I felt like it.

We all explored a sculpture garden

Favorites of the week
We headed out and about on Tuesday — the heat had subsided briefly, and I needed to escape from home! Other than going to my mom, the last time we went anywhere further than our town was 8 months ago.

*I* had a lovely time. Mr. Judy tolerated it (although I think the ice cream at the end helped). The dogs did quite well. I think Lola’s serious hiking days are over, though (there were no serious hikes on this trip).

I had downloaded the Hamilton soundtrack to play as we drove. Which was a lovely bit of synchronicity, as we drove through Schuylerville and close to Philip Schuyler’s (Eliza Hamilton’s father) house — I knew the house was closed, although unsure of the grounds, so we didn’t stop there. Maybe another time.

Lettuce, Chard, Squash, Beets, Scallions & Parsley

We got our first CSA (community supported agriculture) box this week. Mr. Judy will need to step up his veggie consumption!

Not always easy doing Yoga around the dogs!

A impromptu photoshoot on the Yoga platform. Bandit was briefly my Yoga buddy again this week when it was cooler. When it’s hotter he comes and checks on me, but doesn’t hang out with me.

So you or have you done a CSA?

What was your last daytrip?

Got a non-DEET bug spray that actually works?  I’m still looking.

Divine Unity Meditation

ICYMI: You’ll need a mirror for this 15ish minute meditation. If you’ve been feeling scattered, alone, and unconnected, this meditation should be a lovely practice. Excuse the skirt. Last time I’ll film a video in skirt! Watch it here.

Coming up on Tuesday: Dealing with fear. On Friday I’m thinking about ways you can make hard runs more fun. Don’t forget that Skirt Sports is selling off its inventory, so check out the sale here — inventory & prices are decreasing!

  1. I had a CSA box for years and then they changed the day to Fridays which I did not like. i guess now it makes no difference at all bc everyday feels the same. We have not gotten out of our neighborhood at all since March which is so weird. My husband usually travels quite a bit for work, I like how you set intentions for your runs.

    1. Our pickup day is actually Friday. But luckily it’s pretty darn close to our house. Although putting everything away took some time.

There just might be another post about intentions soon, because I’ve been learning more about them recently. 🙂

  2. The Hamilton soundtrack is great for road trips — and long runs! I think today is National Ice Cream Day, isn’t it? I wanted to end up at an ice cream place on our bike ride yesterday, but my husband didn’t think I was serious about it. I could never do a CSA box because my husband’s vegetable consumption is next to nothing.

    1. Apparently today is national ice cream day. I made sundaes with banana nice cream. And magic shell. And granola, and whipped cream . . . oh well, still better than ice cream. 🙂

My husband also doesn’t eat a whole lot of veggies. We’re actually able to customize the box. So I changed one of the heads of lettuce to parsley. Only I got 2 heads of lettuce anyway . . . good thing it’s so hot cause I’m going to be eating a lot of salads!

  3. The sculpture garden looks really cool! I’m hoping to do a few day trips this summer to break up the monotony of being home lol

The veggies in your CSA box look awesome! I was considering doing a CSA box this year but the pries were a little high (not sure if it was Covid related), but we do have a few Farmers Markets that I will explore for products options.

  4. No on the CSA. But at least the Farmers market are open.

We go to Bolton Landing every Sunday if that counts as a day trip.

I have taken 3 Mondays off this summer so I hope to do some day trips. Either with friends or solo. We’ll see.

A sculpture garden would not excite my hubby unfortunately.

  5. In answer to your question:YES! I had that incident with the biting flies last week and I posed the question to the IAT FB group. I’m trialing picaridin, which is non-DEET but repels mosquitoes, ticks, flies… It’s very safe. It is not a neurotoxin like DEET but has the same efficacy. I ordered mine on amazon–Sawyer is the brand.

    1. Thanks, Wendy. Thankfully my bugs aren’t biting but they’re still really annoying! I hadn’t thought of that because it’s not supposedly safe for cats — but of course we don’t have cats right now.

I tried one I read about recently & it was a total failure.

  6. I have to laugh about the dogs and yoga. As I’m typing this, my cat is snuggling between my arms as I lay on the ground! She doesn’t know anything about personal space for sure. I have never done a CSA. I don’t get very adventurous when it comes to veggies! I wouldn’t know what to do with anything other than lettuce, tomatoes and carrots :). My garden is growing pretty well though – except for the watermelons which seemed to have disappeared! Not sure if a bunny got in there or what. Very odd.

    1. My cats always loved it when I did yoga too, but they weren’t Technically outdoor cats.

This is the first time I’ve done a CSA. I love veggies. I never did that before because the lack of veggies my husband eats. At least he’s composting now, so there’s that!

  7. You mentioned being chilled enough to wear a hoodie…that was my run on Thursday. It was in the low-60’s and felt cold in comparison to the crazy heat wave we’ve had for the past couple weeks. Glad you were able to get away briefly…we’ve had a couple trips to each of the kids’ places (less than an hour away), and the hubs and I did a long bike trip recently, but that’s it for us.

  8. I used to be a member of a CSA for years and loved it. Unfortunately they decided to focus their attention elsewhere on their farm and no longer offer the CSA. There are some others in the area but they’re also dwindling, leaving the farmer’s market as my only option.

  9. It must have been nice to get out of town briefly! Back in Feb.I made a quick rode trip to NY and back in 1 day for a friend’s baby shower. Before that the last time I traveled was early January. And no idea when the next time will be that we go anywhere!

    1. I have plans for a few more daytrips before it gets cold. As long as we get more breaks in the heat, which it looks like we will. Much easier without kids — although we typically take the dogs, so there’s that.

It was definitely nice to get away for just a bit!

  10. Good for you for taking a day trip! I think it helps my state of mind to get out and about, at least a little bit. I use ice cream to bribe my hubby too! 😉 Loved seeing photos of you doing yoga outside with your pups. That looks like heaven! I have been doing some of the short yoga workouts from your 21-day series after my runs. It’s a great way to cool down and/or stretch. 15 – 25 minutes is the perfect amount of time for me.

  11. Haha! I love the dogs gate-crashing your yoga sessions! Glad you did a day trip – and that ice-cream at the end would definitely have been the cherry on top for me! I haven’t been on a day trip in ages. I think I’ll have to plan something for us and the kids the next weekend my husband has off.

    1. Oooh, you definitely must plan a daytrip if your husband has the day off!

Bandit will hang out with me when it’s cooler (which it hasn’t been much this summer) — Lola (the chocolate one) just comes to say hi & then goes on her way. 🙂

  12. Ha – I love your yoga buddy!

I am so tired of our neighbourhood, I have got bored with all my runs, too. Ugh. Fortunately people from my photo a day group live all over the place so I can see their different views.

    1. Well, I’m running for my mug, so I wanted to make it actual trails (they’re supposed to be trail runs). There are no trails in my neighborhood! There are trails in a park closer to me, but that one is even buggier.

One last run. A longer runs. As long as the bugs die down a little (they might, it’s supposed to cool off a *little*) I think I’m golden. I know I’ll get it done one way or another but it might not be pretty!

  13. CSA? Sounds similar to Imperfect Foods. I used to get a box but then stopped my subscription because I was not eating all of the fruit and vegetables. I know I can do better. 🙂

Oh gosh, I seriously cannot remember my last day trip. Yep, it’s been that long.

    1. We’ve never done a CSA before mainly because of my husband. I usually eat enough veggies for the both of us, but it’s going to be interesting.

It benefits the Humane Society & the Food Bank, and that’s why my husband was interested. 🙂

  14. I haven’t done a CSA..I’m not a talented enough chef or creative enough to use everything! I would need recipes included in the box 🙂

Glad you got out of town a bit! Buggy runs are no fun….

    1. I don’t need recipes — but this CSA they actually do have some suggested recipes! You’re also able to swap out available veggies. We’re doing well eating them so far. 🙂 Week 1!

    1. More beets for you. 🙂 My husband is not a beet fan. Unfortunately I was visiting my mom when they sent out the email yesterday with what there was in my box, and I really wanted to swap something out but by the time I got home the window to do that had closed! I will definitely remember now when I have to do it by.

  15. The last time I tried to get into a CSA there was a wait list so I sort of gave up and grow what I can. So many farmer’s markets around here aren’t happening. It’s a bummer. Looks like Bandit enjoy the yoga platform as much as you do!

    1. Luckily there was no wait list for this one. 🙂 The farmer’s markets around here have actually opened. I have not been. That seems like it would just be really frustrating with social distancing.

Bandit is basically my guard dog. Doesn’t like to let me out of his sight much. But on the hotter days he comes out to check on me but doesn’t stay.

  16. I’m glad you got out and about with Mr. Judy! Up until our trip to my mom’s last weekend (I’m still visiting), our only day trip was to Sky Meadows State Park for some hiking. It felt amazing to finally get away!

    1. I’m trying to plan another short daytrip, but this month has actually been a bit busy so it’s been hard to pin down a day (and the darn weather is always changing too).

So glad that you got to visit your mom!

      1. I’m not really a huge donut fan. I’d take ice cream. I’m not really a huge ice cream person either, actually, although I do enjoy some in the summer. But when in Rome, so to speak.
