All the Seasons: 4/12 – 18 WRD

I had to cram a lot of fitness into the first part of my week this week, so it’s been a very busy couple of weeks. I wrote this post as the week went along; so much easier to remember what happened that way.

I get my second vaccine next week. Moderna is known for more side effects, and I already had effects from the first. This time at least I know it’s coming, so I’m doing some things that may head off those effects — like drinking Nuun Immunity every day.

Running Update

Can you see the raindrops?

Monday Intention: easy run
It was supposed to be rainy, so I’d planned out my week to run Tuesday. I also planned out my week to visit my mom on Wednesday, and then remembered she plays bridge on Wednesday. So I ran two days in a row so that I could visit her on Tuesday instead (Thursday and Friday were supposed to be rainy again).

I’m surprised we don’t see more of this sort of thing

I did long/short hill repeats. Up the long hill, down and over to the shorter hill, down the short hill, back to the long hill — 3 times. Oddly enough this run actually felt fine. Strong. Maybe because of the cool (50ish), lightly rainy weather.

Don’t ask me why I headed down this knowing I’d have to go back up it!

Wednesday Intention: go the distance, don’t push too hard
Between last week and this week, I’ve crammed in a lot of activity with not as much rest as I probably need. It was a beautiful day, but warm. Mr. Judy was away, so I had to make sure Bandit got a short walk before I left to do my long run. Had I known Thursday wouldn’t be as rainy as forecast . . .

This run started out strong, I was dressed correctly, but I got out too late and after a few cool days the warmer temps really wore me down. I reached for a few tricks, but they didn’t really help. At the end of mile 5 there was a loooong walk break. I did tack on an extra half mile, but I’m not sure that made up for that walk break!

Well, it was definitely more time on my feet. Coming up on the weekend I had a course both days, so I wanted to try and get a long run in before that. Which is how I ended up running more days bunched together than I have in a while!

At least it was gone by midday

Friday Intention: a little speed
With snow on the ground a treadmill run was a no brainer. I’m not really sure why I chose an interval run, it was a somewhat intense week, but it went okay. It was a slight miracle that the mill and my Garmin just about agreed on the mileage — so weird, usually the Garmin is way off (faster) than the mill.

There are people much better at landscaping than us! And I get to enjoy it.

Favorites of the week
All the signs of Spring, even if it was cool and cloudy, even if we did have some snow on Friday and spotty cold rain on the weekend. This is why I prefer Spring to Fall — it’s pretty, the days are getting longer, not shorter, and it just feels so hopeful — as long as you don’t watch the news.

Spring is s great time to visit Olana! April flowers!

Those signs were amply on display at Olana this week! It was chilly when I got there, but the clouds began to break up and eventually it was really pretty. I ate my lunch there and did a little sketching.

Bandit vegging out while I take a Yoga for athletes course

Seriously, Mr. Judy was gone most of the day yesterday, and I had 3 hours straight in the morning and Bandit laid there without moving (much). I left the door open so he could go out, but he never got off the chaise. I was freezing! It was colder than forecast.

Today I have the second half, but we’re supposed to do some Yoga this morning, Mr. Judy is home, and I suspect Bandit might not hang out with me but we’ll see.

Did Winter come back to visit this week?

Are you training for something? If yes, how’s that training going?

GWY Root Chakra

ICYMI: A lovely stretch for your lower body, ending with several restorative poses. I’ll be explaining more about the Root Chakra, posing a lot of questions, and suggest that you journal after this practice. You’ll find the video here.

Coming up on Tuesday: My pre long run/LSD routine. Friday I’m . . . not sure yet!

  1. Well done on those hill repeats, Judy!
Your views in your neighbourhood are so pretty. And I think Bandit has it right: chilling when the weather is unfriendly seems like a good idea! 😄

  2. Cold yesterday? Didn’t think so. But it is warmer today. My hikes were lovely.

My running is the same whether or not I have a race. Next one is May 30. 10 miler which works out perfectly since I always run 10 on the weekend.

Hope the 2nd vaccine goes well. Not everyone has a reaction.

  3. Your spring is definitely a few weeks behind ours! Can’t believe you had snow again! I really hope you dont’ have such bad side effects this time. I always think I am going to write my posts as the week goes by but that never seems to happen! Have a good one

  4. I hope the 2d vaccine goes well. I wasn’t aware that Moderna had worse side effects than Pfizer or J&J. It seems to be so variable.

We’re supposed to get snow on Tuesday. All I can say is come on, man!

  5. On my run today I was listening to a Ruch Roll podcast where they talked about setting an intention before every workout, and I thought of you!
I’ll be interested to hear how your second shot goes, and if the things you’re doing ahead of time help. I also had an unpleasant experience with the first Moderna shot, and was thinking of things I could do before the second shot to help my immune system. Although I’m not sure if that will help because apparently the side affects are due to a healthy immune system response? I just don’t know anymore!

    1. I’ve been doing immune boosting yoga & pranayama. The Nuun Immunity. And will probably do some extra vitamin D a few days before the shot.

Unless there’s no reaction, there’s no way to really tell if it makes a difference. Although I know what the side effects to the first one: low grade temp; sore arm (this one doesn’t really bother me that much); fatigue; and the increased inflammation.

I didn’t have nausea or a headache with the first but I know a lot of people do.

    1. Good luck to you too! My husband had the sore arm & temporary fatigue from the Pfizer’s & that was it for him. It’s all so random!

I like to go back & forth between strides & short hill repeats. But I haven’t been doing anything crazy tough for a long time!

  6. All the best with that second dose. I’ve heard the second Pfizer is a stinker but everyone’s different I guess. I never thought about loving spring running more than fall but I have to say this spring has been pretty great in that it hasn’t been too muddy. The lengthening days and budding trees are wonderful.

    1. It’s plenty muddy here!

Yes, I’ve heard Moderna more side effects & from the people I know that’s generally the way it’s been. Mr. Judy had Pfizer, he just had the sore arm & like one day of fatigue each time.

      It’s all random it seems!

  7. We had winter temps, but no precip…but now I hear there’s possible snow on Tuesday. UGH! I wish I had a tarp big enough to drape over my magnolia tree. I’m not a fan of the on/off weather in Spring, but I do agree the flowers are quite beautiful and the longer days do give a definite feeling of hope 😉

  8. I love tulips and hyacinth — they definitely mean spring to me. But not the snow!

My husb and mom had their second Moderna doses last week. My husband had mild flu symptoms (feeling achy and blah) and my mom got a low fever. Since the reactions are based on immune responses, I’m not sure anything designed to boost your immune system would make them less severe. 😉 I hope you have a mild reaction regardless.

    1. Immune boosting is never wasted, especially since I’ve been kind of pushing myself the last couple of weeks. Not really intentionally, just a lot of stuff going on.

Sometimes snow means Spring here. 🤣

  9. Beautiful pictures. I usually feel better and stronger after some hill repeats. Weird…my Garmin is getting closer to the treadmill distance too. Humm. Wonder if they made an update we aren’t aware of. Mine is usually slower than the treadmill. Glad you enjoyed your beautiful week. Hope this one is good for you too.

  10. loving the hill workout. I keep telling myself I’m going to do some hill repeats but I guess I’m just nervous about my knee. Last week was nuts here weather – wise. we didn’t get snow, but we did get a ton of hail at the beginning of the week. For some reason the early mornings were clear so I at least didn’t get pelted before breakfast ha! Oh and one of the bigger statues in town had a mask on last week… I almost expected Audrey (Hepburn) to have one on a couple weeks ago when I walked past her!

  11. Bandit knows where it’s at! He’s so cozy!

Good luck with your second vaccine. We get our second Pfizer tomorrow and I’m a little nervous. I’m sure it will be fine, but you know, anxiety.

It did get chilly again here. I don’t mind, but I wish the weather would make up its mind.

  12. I find my treadmill runs are more fun and less boring when I do intervals instead of a steady speed run. Yay for your Garmin and treadmill paces coming close to matching!

I had to bring in or cover my flowers last night and will have to again tonight with another freeze warning just posted. We actually had snow flurries this morning.
