Should I Stay or Go Now?: 10/11 – 17 WRD

The week started out with my Mom on her way to the hospital. Seriously, I took her to the cardiologist the previous Tuesday and by the next Monday she was in the hospital with (supposedly) pneumonia. With assurances from my sister that she wasn’t at death’s door and the very limited hospital visiting hours, I stayed home — although every day I didn’t know whether or not I’d need to go down. I appreciate you guys listening to me go on and on about all this, but what can I say? That’s my life.

I’m joining Kim @ Kimrunsonthefly and Deborah @ Confessionsofamotherrunner, and sharing a another surprisingly active week — gotta get it in when you can!

Running Update

Summer/Fall of Fungi

Monday Intention: change the scenery, get in some miles before leaving again potentially
I got an early morning call from my sister. My mom was on her way to the hospital. Of course we weren’t sure what was going down, if I’d have to go down (probably), so I got out to do some grocery shopping and get in a few miles while I could. Consistent the first 2, then tried to — successfully — pick up the pace.

Obviously I’m not the only one leaving off letters. Inspirational messages along local marathon route.

Wednesday Intention: go long-er
Mom still in the hospital, I’m still at home, unsure of what the week will bring, so wanted to knock out my long-er run. It’s been incredibly foggy & chilly in the mornings the last couple of days, warmer by the afternoon. Glad I chose to wear a skirt.

Picked up the pace the last mile again — it’s just a long-er run, not a long run (that is, less than 90 minutes), but that last mile was the fastest I’ve seen in a long time. Have I slowed down? Probably. Maybe not with some speed work and some less stress.

I think we’re about at peak but between wind & rain . . . not sure why it was a blurry pic

Thursday Intention: recover
I couldn’t do recovery miles after Monday’s run because we wanted to hike on Tuesday, but today I had the time. Man I felt slow! It wasn’t actually as slow as it felt. Mom still in the hospital, no better, no worse.

The winds & rain last night blew a lot of leaves & pine needles off our trees but this neighbor’s tree is still hanging onto its leaves.

Sunday Intention: just run
As in see if I could just run a mile with no walking, which I did. As I often do, I came up with that intention on the run. It was a somewhat speedy mile for me. I originally was going to do 2 easy, but trying to not make the mistake of adding on too much again. So a little speed it was. Didn’t hurt that it had cooled off massively overnight (and the wind/rain took down a lot of the leaves). Mom now home.

A good day full of gentle hiking & waterfalls

Favorites of the week
We did get to enjoy a lovely hike on Tuesday.

We finally dealt with the pie pumpkins we got a couple of weeks ago. Mr. Judy has been asking me about them almost on the daily, but I knew it would be a big project — and it was! Done. Yes, you can expect a post about that in a little bit.

My mom finally came home from the hospital on Saturday. Fingers crossed she can stay home. Happy dance that she didn’t  have to go to rehab again!

  1. Glad your Mom is home, and I do hope she stays healthy! LOL on finally dealing with the pie pumpkins. I tend to get over-ambitious at the farmer’s market, and then have to force myself to actually cook what I’ve bought.

    1. The pie pumpkins were from our veggie box, so sight unseen. I just assumed they’d fit in the Instant Pot. Not! But Mr. Judy helped me out & cut them into chunks so I could cook them in there. Still a lot of work!

  2. Ugh, that’s tough! I’m so glad your mom is back home, and not in the hospital or rehab. I’ve been through this with my own parents, so I know how stressful it can be.
Sounds like you had a good week of running and workouts! I can’t wait to hear how you”dealt” with the pie pumpkins- I’m hoping you baked them into some delicious treats.

    1. This isn’t our first rodeo with the hospital/rehab rodeo, we went through it several times with my Dad (he passed 2 years ago).

To top it off, her phone isn’t working again — I’ve only talked to her once this week! I’m sure I will be down there this week, just not which day yet.

    1. Every day I had no idea what was going to happen, so I just did what I could when I could. Obviously I ended up staying home this week so took advantage of it.

In addition to taking care of my mom, in just a few weeks I’ll be on call for jury duty all month long. I really hope they don’t have a trial. Not a great time.

  3. I’m so glad that your mom’s condition improved and that she was able to go home. I can’t imagine how stressful this week must have been for you. I know it’s hard but be sure to carve out some time to take care of yourself!

    1. Well, I’m sure you can imagine how stressful it was, Kim, unfortunately, considering what you’ve gone through.

We were very happy they didn’t insist on rehab. I don’t think she would’ve come back from that, but am also still worried about her trying to do too much on her own. Because she thinks she can.

  4. Glad to read your mom is doing better. Watching our parents age is really hard and kind of depressing but something we all have to go through. We are all here for you! Running can be such a great stress reliever

  5. Glad your mom is back home now! I hope she continues to improve. I’m sure this must be so stressful for you! Glad you could still get some runs in. I’m sure it helps to get outside and get moving.

  6. I’m so glad your mom is home again. It’s hard to see our parents getting older. My mom and dad are pretty healthy. Mike’s dad is starting to slow down. You know it’s coming, but it’s not easy. Glad you were able to move your body a bit. It sure helps.

  7. Great news about your mom. I hope she’s able to stay healthy for a good long time. Tomorrow is my dad’s one year anniversary and my mom fell recently and is now using a cane. It is not easy at all.

  8. I’ve been thinking of you and your mom so much in recent weeks. Glad to hear things have stabilized (somewhat) for now. I bakefess, I have made many pumpkin pies (and bars, bread, etc.), but have always used the canned pumpkin. I’ll be curious to hear the story of your pumpkins 😉

  9. Glad your mom is home. So hard to navigate
Interesting how everyone defines long run differently. I use mileage v. time because I’m slow, runs that take me 90m aren’t long enough for me to call them long, mileage wise.
Yay on the fast last mile

    1. Either the new shoes really are magic or it’s just the fall weather. Seriously, I think it’s the shoes!

It is a difficult time. It’s not going to get better, unfortunately. I am blessed to have siblings. And that my sister didn’t move to FL!

  10. I’m glad your mom is home and didn’t have to go into rehab. I hope she continues to improve.

Mentioning your pie pumpkin reminds me of a funny story. When Bill and I were dating we bought a pumpkin to make a pumpkin pie and when we called his mom for tips, she recommended we carve it into a Jack-O-Lantern and buy Libby’s canned pumpkin for the pie. LOL

  11. I’m sorry about your mom and hope she improves. It’s great that you are close enough to help.

Oh, I’m interested to hear about the pie pumpkins!

    1. Thank you so much for letting me know, Liz; I love to hear that what I’m putting out is helping. I might just have something similar but with a foam roller soon. I realized it had been a while since I’d foam rolled my neck this morning so I tried it out!
