Bring in the New: 10/17 – 23 WRD

A new aide is coming tomorrow, and my sister will handle it. I both feel guilty and not — she works in retail, so it’s a busy time for her. On the other hand, I think I’ve onboarded all the aides except for one, maybe two. There has been a lot of aides. Too many. Maybe this one will be the one.

We celebrated our 37th Anniversary on Wednesday. It’s still a bit tinged with sadness because two years ago after our anniversary daytrip (which wasn’t actually on the exact date of our anniversary — weather and what not) Lola got sick and by the end of the week (on Halloween) we had to help her to the rainbow bridge. Bandit ain’t a spring chicken, either.

I’m joining Kim @ Kimrunsonthefly and Deborah @ Confessionsofamotherrunner — and dialing back running a bit — but it’s still going pretty well.

Running Update

A cool but lovely Fall day

Tuesday intention: push speed, but decrease intervals
Just 2 tempo intervals for this run. The pace was on par with last week — I thought it would be slower. It should be faster, considering a 3 mile vs a 4 miles run. Still slower than pre-booster but not too bad.

Colors are being drained but not on these trees, not this day

Thursday intention: speed in a different way — practice negative splits
It was a chilly, windy morning even though I waited a while before getting out for my run. I haven’t done a progressive run in a long time so decided to mix things up and do it this morning. I wasn’t sure how that would go, but I nailed it. Sad that it’s now too chilly to enjoy post run snack and journaling out by the river.

Running into Fall

Sunday intention: a shorter long run
A bit chilly this morning! Plenty of practice running on leaves again. Happy to be back the trails with duck hunting over. Pace was a bit better than it’s been in a while, but of course it was a short-er long run.

Bringing it on in

By the time I finished it was finally warm enough to sit by the river — and journal– got there just in time to snap the above photo of the kayakers coming in. It’s been far too chilly lately for that; relaxing by the river is one of my happy places.

If you squint hard you can see the waterfall behind us on the right

Favorites of the week
We managed to hit Thacher Park at peak this week — there was even a little water flowing through the various waterfalls. Then we picked up some Pho (Vietnamese chicken noodle soup) and Banh mihs (Vietnamese sandwiches) for our Anniversary meal. It was a chilly day so that really hit the spot!

Glad peak Fall colors & our anniversary coincided

There are more photos on Facebook (here if you don’t follow me already) — in fact, there’s a lot of photos on Facebook again this week because . . . Fall.

ICYMI: Open your chest, shoulders, and inner thighs — areas we don’t always work on as much as we need to — flow with me here, We’ve spent most of October letting go of things — that’s what you should be doing in October. Now it’s time to think about what you want to bring into your life. You can also listen to my Letting Go Affirmations here.

Coming up on Friday: It’s time for Runfessions. Maybe you’ve already picked up on something I’ve been quietly doing without much fanfare?

  1. Wow, stunning pictures. You really are having some beautiful color this year. It sounds like you and Mr. Judy had a lovely anniversary.

I hope this aide is the one! Mom had a new aide start on Thursday morning and quit on Thursday evening. She said the drive was too far. 😦

  2. Happy Anniversary. It was nice that the weather cooperated for you. It was cold, rainy and windy in Rochester both Wed & Thurs.

I think we know that you’ve been training for a trail half (or is it just me?) Not sure why it’s a secret. But I hope it goes well. As well as the new aide and vacation.

    1. I just hope my sister doesn’t implode tomorrow. I have an appointment probably around the time the new aide will get there . . . although maybe I’ll be finished by the, she’ll most likely have some questions.

  3. Happy anniversary! I’m sorry it’s a bittersweet time of year for you. I don’t have strong memories for the date TL passed. I do know I kept putting it off around my birthday ….

    Those fall colors are stunning.

    1. Halloween is pretty easy to remember. And she literally couldn’t stand the date after our Anniversary day trip. It happened that quickly but there was a week of trying things until we knew we had to let her go. Of course the memories fade over time.

  5. Aw, sounds like you were able to have a really nice anniversary! Your photos are beautiful, and that meal sounds delicious. i hope everything works out with this new aide! I think being a live-in aide is a hard job, which is why there’s such a high turnover. Glad your sister was able to help.

    1. Being a live in aide with a tiny bedroom and a client who’s never really satisfied with you — ugh, I couldn’t do it. I have great empathy for them. Plus they’re stuck in the middle of nowhere! OTOH all this change has not been good for my mom. There’s more to the story but I won’t bore you with it!

  6. Happy anniversary! I’ll echo everyone else–the fall colors are spectacular. I’m hoping ours are still intact when I get home tomorrow!

So sorry about the aide situation. You know how hard it is to find good help right now. So many places are understaffed as it is.

    1. Oh yes I do know how hard it is; one of the biggest problems, though, is that all the change is really confusing to my mom. Not good. But of course we can’t “change” it.

I hope you get to enjoy Fall at home but your trip looks amazing!

  7. Happy anniversary!! Glad you were able to get away for a bit. The fall colors in your area look so pretty. I really do hope your aide is the one – I know it’s so hard to find someone. I didn’t get to go kayaking this past weekend, but it sure would have been a great time to go due to the weather.

  8. Happy wedding anniversary! So glad that you were able to get away for a few days .
I hope that this new aide works out for your mom. I know it’s been a very stressful journey for you and your family.

  9. Happy anniversary! I love the picture of you in your hats! And I hope the aide works out. I thought Matthew’s parents’ house would be ideal for an aide as there’s a bathroom and bedroom up the top of the house a live-in could stay in … except they’ve packed it with junk and stuff and bits and bobs – arghh!! Not that they need one yet, but it will come.

I had my autumn Covid booster on Saturday – the Pfizer bivalent – I then went into town, had a BookCrossing meetup, went back home, went to a book event, got home for the evening, started to wind … down … Sunday was a total loss!! I had a blood test today and remembered to get the nurse to put a note on that I’m still recovering from my Covid jab as I’ve got glands up and I’m pretty sure white blood cell count will be higher than it should! Feel OK now though, all very weird! But worth it, of course!

    1. My parents house had LOTS of space — but a full staircase up to the house & my Dad would never have used a lift. Most aides don’t drive either, and both my parents had stopped driving by the time they moved. We spent years clearing out my parents house. Then we’ll ultimately have to clear out the apartment.

I’m glad you’re feeling better! I did have a reaction to the booster too — it was just SO much less severe than any previous reactions. That’s been wearing me dow, too, I swear (all the previous ones).

  10. I hope this newest aide is a keeper. The struggle is real to find reliable help for sure. Your pics are stunning. I do think the fall colors this year are especially vibrant. I am making sure to enjoy them before they’re gone! Happy Anniversary!

    1. Obviously I made it my mission to enjoy our Fall colors, too. Ours are on the way out, especially with some rain this week. You wouldn’t think it would be so pretty considering we had a very dry Summer? Maybe that’s what’s needed!?

  11. Ooh, I am ready for runfessions.

Happy anniversary. It looks like you had a wonderful time with all these fall colors. You and your husband look so happy in that photo.

I wish you wouldn’t feel guilty about your sister onboarding your mom’s aide. You need a little break, too.
