Sunny Skies Ahead: 5/22 – 28 WRD

Just rebuilding my base, and considering how I want to stay fit going forward. I’ve been toying with the idea of alternating weeks with 2 runs and the next 3 runs, filling in with cycling (indoors, since I still don’t like real bikes!). Haven’t decided yet. Meanwhile Mother Nature is gifting us some spectacular weather, with just a bit of heat thrown in to keep us humble.

I’m joining Kim @ Kimrunsonthefly and Deborah @ Confessionsofamotherrunner and enjoying the short runs again.

Running Update

Picked up this book at the free library in my neighborhood post run. Most are probably a bit much for us, but there are some we might be able to tackle. A girl can dream anyway.

Tuesday intention: run easy
Another gorgeous morning for a run, although I had to walk Bandit first so by the time I got out there it was a full 10 degrees warmer than my last run and my pace reflected that. I’m just happy I can take advantage of some great running weather!

Cool & windy morning but still channeling my spirit animal apperently

Thursday intention: go long-er
Not a longer run, just extended the easy run a bit. This one was slow and felt hard. Not sure why. It was a bit windy, but not that bad.

Lola is thriving despite the late frost this year

Saturday intention: try the fast shoes
The fast shoes did not disappoint. It wasn’t a fast run, but it was quite a bit faster than Thursday’s run, despite getting out a bit late and warmer temps. I had toyed with the idea of adding in strides this week but decided against it. Maybe next week.

My view for breakfast

Favorites of the week
This week I chose to walk where I usually run on Friday. I just needed some time in nature and it was a really lovely walk, exploring a bit further than I’d been previously (more photos on Facebook here). There are many trails in this preserve with a variety of terrain.

We all enjoyed eating lunch outside at a restaurant one day this week (well, Bandit only got treats)

I chatted with my cousins, who were visiting my mom, via the Echo. By the time I knew what their schedule was, it was just not possible to make the trip, since we’ll be there for Memorial Day. I only have a couple of cousins still living, and unfortunately they live on the West Coast so I rarely see them (they’re also quite a bit older than me; I am the baby of not only my family but of my generation, too).

ICYMI: this Yin Yoga flow will help you strengthen your outer hips and release frustration so you can move into joy. Practice with me here. If you’re short on time I’ve got a shorter Spring Yin Yoga practice here.

Coming up next Week: I’ve tackled the low mileage runfessions, now it’s time to tell you what’s up in my life lately.

  1. Beautiful weather this week but of course it heated up (too much) for today’s race. And no shade on this beautiful course… still happy to be running those long races again!!

Good luck on your come back.

  2. Glad you had a chance to take advantage of this glorious weather. It can be fleeting as we all know. I only have cousins on my dad’s side because both of my mom’s siblings died young (her bro drowned in his teens and her sister died of a brain tumor in her 20s) but I runfess I really don’t know them at all, likely because my dad was not at all close with his siblings. They were all split up as kids when both parents passed away. Sad.

    1. Oh, that is really sad. I don’t know my cousins really well because they were just so much older than me. They’re all actually really nice we just don’t get to interact. In fact my cousin was like “if you decide you want to do a half in San Diego you know you can stay with us”. He’s a real athlete though, I don’t think he realizes how long that takes me! 🙂 My brother knows them better because he lives so much closer.

  3. Glad to hear your weather played nice this week! Although I’m really loving the summertime feels in Iowa, the early mornings are still a bit tricky when it comes to the proper layers, etc. I really want to get in some early morning bike rides, but it’s tough to second guess just how much colder it’s gonna feel with that crazy wind. First world probs, LOL.

    1. Well I know it’ll get hot & stay hot soon, probably, and Bandit is just a problem in the heat, so I’m still loving the cool mornings! Hope you get comfortable riding weather soon.

  4. Hasn’t the past couple of weeks been amazing? I still can’t believe how nice it is and that we’ve actually had a spring. Cocoa, of course, can’t get enough of being outside with us and chasing the ball!

  5. Sounds like a lovely week of sunny weather!

Nice find with the hike book!

I need to look into the Peloton changes more, I currently pay $12.99, but I don’t use the cycle or run classes, so maybe the free option would work for me.

  6. Lovely photos! I had a hot run yesterday as I slept in, which I needed, but then had to have breakfast and couldn’t go out till 11. BOILING! Well, for here. Sorry you didn’t get to see your cousins. I’m close to two of mine and their families out of the ten I have!

    1. Wow! 10 cousins. I only have 4 living cousins (two of those are by marriage) on my side. Or do 8 just count the blood relations? In which case only 2. I had one other cousin, but she was almost a shut in so I rarely saw her & sadly she passed away a few years ago.

11! Yikes! But I’ve been there.

      1. Not sure how that works on blood relations or not – do you mean blood relations are the children of your aunts and uncles, non-blood their spouses? I call them cousins-in-law. I also have some cousins once removed, my one cousin’s two sons, and then a newly found second cousin (we share a great-grandfather), who my cousin encountered by accident when he was recommended as her gardener!

      2. That is very cool about the new found second cousin! I actually forgot one. So I have three. One actually does live on the east coast, but in FL, so it’s rare that I see her, too. She’s the closest to me in age, so 7 years older. My husband’s cousins are closer to me in age, and obviously to him too. In some ways I know them better, although none of them live all that close.

  7. Perfect weather for outdoor activities. I am sure that Bandit appreciates a lot the walks in this period.
Real bikes is not so bad; I have a pedal assist bike for shopping and other services around my city.

  8. I wish we had a solid spring. I think I would prefer it to fall, honestly. But we get four seasons of summer, with a month of polar freeze thrown in. Sigh.

Your plans sounds solid, and maybe just the thing for you.

  9. we are finally having some great weather here too, what a difference it makes. I sometimes walk where I normally run or used to run, especially to look around more, see things that maybe I don’t see when in the thick of it, or even think about times that were good when I was running and try to harness those good feelings for a while. I’m the first of my cousins and have contact with exactly one of them… my families are fragmented and weird. it’s really sad.

    1. I’m sorry about the fragmented family. I wouldn’t say we’re close, but much of that has been due to age & location differences. We all do get along.

Yes, sometimes it’s really nice to stop & smell the roses! Glad you’re enjoying nice weather, too.
