I want to soar like an eagle: 3/28-4/3 Weekly Wrap

After the Delmar Dash today, Darlene, Barbara and I ran 5 more miles on the rail trial. Well, Barbara only wanted to go a couple but she just kept going and going . . .  and then they saw eagles. Without them, I would never have seen them. So cool. I didn’t even attempt photos with my Ipod, as I would have had eagle specs.

Don’t forget to let us know how your week went at the Weekly Wrap from Holly @ Hohoruns and Tricia @ Misssipppiddlin.

My first PT Appointmtnet
I went for my first physical therapy appointment on Monday. My ankle was a lot better, but it still isn’t normal, and I’d like to get back to normal. The good news is because I didn’t wait too long (although it had been bothering me for 6 weeks already), he thinks I’ll be back to normal sooner rather than later.

Bear with me, this is likely to get long. One day, about 6 weeks ago, totally out of the blue, the top of my ankle was a little sore after a run. After my next long run it was really sore. I went to my chiropractor, but I didn’t mention when I made the appointment that I was having a problem because a) it didn’t seem that bad and b) I just didn’t think to. My bad.

Her quickie diagnosis? It was not tendinitis . . . yet. She recommended lots of stretching. Some bloggers warned me against that, but I started to do Yamuna Foot Fitness on a regular basis again, and quickly found Jill Miller’s Yoga Tuneup Quickfix RX Lower body — and started doing that regularly, too (disclaimer: both of those are Amazon affiliate links and I will earn a small amount if you buy them by clicking through my links).

There is no doubt that it got better, but as I said, it wasn’t normal. I’d read good things about Positive Motion Fitness, and I made an appointment.

After about 2 hours of examining me, watching me walk, stretching me, and showing me the stretches I was going to do 3 x day going forward, the truth is my chiropractor was right: I need to stretch the $#*t out of my ankle. Three times a day. Which adds like 30 minutes to my day.

Diagnosis? I have some tendons that are aggravated by tight ankles, from simple aging and pounding pavement, that hasn’t yet progressed to tendinitis, thankfully. Tomorrow I go back for a gait analysis.

I could have gone back to my chiropractor, no doubt. But I know she wouldn’t be spending quite as much time with me, or showing me all those skeletons and books with tendon pictures — which I dig. Part of me says being a physical therapist would be so cool. I’ve actually thought that for a long time, but the truth is I like my life as it is, for the most part.

Running update
Running seemed a bit sluggish this week, but it was also insanely windy (20+ mph winds) for every.single. run.

I did all my PT exercises, I got in strength training 3 times, but yoga suffered again and again — not enough cross training. I didn’t get on the bike at all this week. Between my appointment and Lola’s vet appointment it was a busy week and guess what? This week looks pretty much like a repeat. Minus a race.

In addition to Darlene, 2 of my USAFit buddies showed up for the Delmar Dash. We woke to 3″ of snow and a layer of ice, but the conditions for the race were fine, and I pushed it and am quite happy with my race.

Then 5 more miles with Darlene & Barbara (partway) and as I told Darlene, put a fork in me. Soooooo tired.

Favorites of the Week
Running a race with lots of friends! I’ve run this race 4 times I think? The first time I’m not sure I knew anyone. I met Darlene at it for the first time 3 years ago. For the last 2 years we’ve run more miles afterwards. And this time I had friends with me that I could actually run with — for part of the race (I’ll get to that when I recap it . . . .someday).

I also ran into a couple of complete strangers at certain miles that I ran with for maybe half a mile, which actually helped me keep on pace.

And, of course, the postrace massage. Awesome. My ankle felt fine then, but I won’t lie, it’s a little achy as I write this later in the day. We’ll see how it feels tomorrow morning. However, I’m not worried about it and my upcoming half. I know it’ll be fine (and I still have about 6 weeks).

And of course I fueled with all the sushi the night before, too. Seemed to work for me!
And that’s a wrap!

Do you have a favorite flat & fast race?

    1. Well, it’s my left side too — he said my right side is actually tighter, so i guess I’ve been compensating.

I do think the stretches have helped — it actually feels better now after a shower (I did my stretches & foam rolling when I got home from the race, and will stretch it again before I go to bed.

We’ll see how it feels tomorrow morning. I ran hard — for me — today!

  1. Yay for race with friends! PT exercises can take some time but they are worthwhile…which reminds me I should really do my hip/butt exercises.

  2. I too think PT would be a fabulous occupation! Gah, if I was 20! I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my torture, I mean PT sessions. Coco put it best — It’s like having a personal trainer that you don’t have to pay for. AMEN. (Insurance paid as I had a doc’s referral.) I think I’m on week 9 or 10. I’m sure it will end soon. But I feel like I have the necessary tools now. Congrats on the Delmar Dash in the snow. I can say, I’ve never run a race in the snow (just a training run in VA). I can also report I’ve never run extra miles after a race. So, you are the bomb. Thanks for linking with us Judy.

    1. Hey, you’re never too old to learn stuff (miss coach).

I wish my insurance paid for all of the PT. It’s supposed to pay a copay, but we don’t yet know what that might be.

The snow was over by the time the race started, but yes, I have run races in the snow.

I don’t run extra miles after a race very often, but that’s because I don’t race often. Darlene does it all the time!

  3. You saw eagles! That’s amazing!! What an honor. And I hope you enjoy find benefit in your PT. I went to PT for the first time a couple of months ago and it was one of the best things I did for myself. Loved it! I hope you heal quick!!

    1. Well, what actually happened was Darlene & Barbara saw people staring at the sky & asked them what was happening. By the time I caught up with them, they were able to point out the eagles to me. 🙂

  4. What is with the left side of our bodies??? It’s also my left side where I have the piriformis stuff, hamstring tendonitis, and Plantar Fasciitis (when it flares, which has not happened in a long time). I know all these “issues” have to be connected…somehow….

I’m glad you had a great race with your gals, and all those extra miles? Bonus time with friends 😉

  5. Congrats on the race and wow to 5 after! That always exhausts me. Glad you’re attending to your ankle. I went thru a bout of peroneal tendinitis that put me in the pool for weeks. Blah!

    1. Yeah, it did exhaust me but it had to get down. We did rest, I got my quickie massage, and we refueled.

Actually that was the nice thing about running 5+5 — no need to carry fuel or water with me, just eat all of it afterwards!

  6. Oooo, hope you enjoy the massage ! I should have scheduled one but am leaving on a trip. Again. tomorrow….
And the snow ? Yuck ! But it will be full blown spring before you know it. The days are getting really longer, that is what keeps me going when the weather gets bad !

    Love the finisher photo !

    1. Nope, we got ever MORE snow today. In fact, this is the first time my husband used the snowblower this year!

I had my second PT appt, and the roads were just awful. By the time my husband came home they weren’t that bad. And I had to shovel out the bottom of the driveway just to get in because the plow had just been around.

Wow, another business trip? You must be exhausted or just have the best energy ever!

  7. I sacrificed yoga this week too. I’m focusing on my own PT exercises, and yoga is the first to go. I’m still stretching when I run, but I only did yoga on its own once.

  8. I hope the ankle continues to improve! It’s always good to have a plan of action. So cool that y’all saw eagles during your extra miles on Sunday! We see falcons and hawks in our area. Birds of Prey are so neat looking – so powerful!

  9. Sorry to hear about your ankle. It’s so important to see the doc as soon as you can, just in case! It looks like you’re on the path to getting better. I’m with you though – PT exercises take up so much TIME! But we gotta do them!

I need to try a Yoga for Runners. I’d like to practice at home at least once a week but have struggled to find something that works for me in my living room lol.

    1. You really don’t need a lot of space for yoga! All you need is space for your mat. I’ve done it in our living room, usually in our family room which is my exercise room, even small hotel rooms!).

  10. I too hope your ankle gets back to normal. I know I don’t stretch like I should and you are right one person says do it before another not. We’re all different. I stretch before but don’t always right after but when I do I think it helps. I love races that have the option to get a massage/stretch session since really what it is help with stretching. Either way I love it and hey I’ve paid for it twice!

    1. I LOVE races with massages. It seems like a win-win, too, since it’s people who are learning to be massage therapists.

I usually stretch after, but I’ve been known to skip it sometimes, too.
