BBQ vs Grilling: 7/10-16 Weekly Wrap

It’s been a quiet month but I’m digging it. My body is also enjoying the fact that right now there’s only one semi-hard run per week . . . I’m sure that won’t last long.

I’m joining up with the Weekly Wrap from Holly @ Hohoruns and Tricia @ Misssipppiddlin and a guest host for the Weekly Wrap to wrap up my week. I’d love to hear how your week went — join us!

Running updates

Tuesday

The forecasters are really pissing me off. They keep forecasting rain all day and then it’s dry all day. Don’t get me wrong, we’ve had a rainy summer, but I just want an accurate forecast. Even semi-accurate.

Anyhoo, that’s mostly why I ended up on the treadmill today for the first time in a long time. Yes, Old Faithful appears to be working again. I upped my running pace just a bit and the whole 3 miles felt good.

Wednesday

Again, rain forecast all morning. It didn’t happen. Again. But it was super humid. By the time I fed everyone and got out there, it was already 8 am. The warmup miles were fine. Then there were the long hill repeats. I did my best . . . I’m not quite sure it’s what Rachel @ Runningonhappy wanted, but it’s early days.

I considered picking up Bandit for the cool down, but a) it was too hot and humid and b) because I’ve lost the charger for my Garmin I didn’t want to stop and have it run out of juice. Thankfully it had enough charge to cover this run.

Thursday

Back on the treadmill. There was predicted thunderstorms and one big boom . . . of course in the end it didn’t rain during this run and I could have run outside.  Oh well.

This particular circle is my nemesis; I often get lost here

Saturday

It’s a broken record of course: humid, rain predicted, no actual rain. There was cloud cover and a decent breeze; this run didn’t suck. Since my schedule and the group schedule didn’t mesh, and I didn’t sleep well and was up early anyway, I got in my extra 2 miles before the group.

I questioned my decision to add in some thigh work yesterday — definitely suffering a little DOMs from Friday’s workouts but nothing too bad.

I did manage to take a wrong turn, and ended up cutting back through the park (good thing I know it well!) since I didn’t want to add another mile to my run or walk forever at the end.

Favorites of the week
The charger for my Garmin went missing last week. I ordered a cheap replacement from Amazon — finding an actual replacement charger wasn’t actually easy — but I could see that one wouldn’t stand up so we did finally find and order an actual Garmin replacement charger.

Of course I looked all over the place for it. This morning, as we prepared to head down to my parents, Mr. Judy found it. In his car. No idea how it ended up there — it’s magnetic, so it tends to attach to metal objects, but still, just no idea.

It was quite the spread (and good)

We went to my parents today and took them out to a BBQ place. One with smokers; the real deal. We learned in TX that what y’all call barbeque up north is usually grilling. Mr. Judy really loved his BBQ. I’m not a big fan, actually, and brought my own lunch (but tried a little of everything).

My parents really love it, though, and they get pickier the older they get . . . they really enjoyed lunch.

And because Lola always needs a potty break, we finally stopped at the Martin Van Buren nature trails that we always pass on the way to my parents. They look nice, except they were not maintained and we couldn’t get very far before it was all overgrown. On the other side of the road, by the actual house (we stopped on the way back), they look like they’re better maintained.

And that’s a wrap

This week I am also linking up with the Sunday Fitness & Food Linkup brought to you by Ilka @ Ilka’s Blog and Angela @ Marathons & Motivation.

Let’s get the conversation started:

BBQ or grilled?

Favorite BBQ meat?

Ever lost your GPS watch charger? Was it a problem?

  1. I think that weather people have the best job ever. They can be wrong more than half of the time, yet still get paid, lol.

I love that you always have such a great mix of workouts for the week!
That BBQ place sounds great! The smoker meant they were definitely authentic!!

    1. Looks who’s talking about a mix of workouts! Except for the running, very few of mine are more than 30 minutes. Often only ten or fifteen minutes.

The guy who owns the BBQ place has an interesting story my husband discovered. From haute cuisine in the city until he decided to try a barbecue place because he was basically burned out on cooking. Without knowing anything about BBQ!

    1. This charge actually works really well — my previous Garmin’s charger was a real pain. But because of the magnetic, it just comes right together. I actually really like the charger!

But I use the watch as a watch, as my GPS, as my alarm when I need one, as a way to get my texts . . . I really hated being without it.

  2. The weather app I use is quite good, but it can change its mind quite quickly – maybe someone just looks out of the window and updates it!!!

  3. Boo to the weather throwing off your running plans! At least you have a treadmill at home to use…I need to get one for my basement!

I love BBQ, and my bf really loves the stuff. Ribs will always be my favorite, but I love pulled pork too.

    1. The treadmill was broken for quite some time, but it’s fixed . . . for now. We got 2 years out of the last fix.

We shard a tasting plate — ribs, brisket, pulled pork, and chicken. It was enough for the 4 of us with plenty of leftovers, too — although I only tasted it. Then. We did have some for dinner when we got home — I had something else planned but I just wasn’t feeling it.

  4. Grilling all the way here!! I don’t like smoked meat and I have not found a BBQ sauce that I like!!
I’ve never lost a charger, but my previous Garmin quit holding a charge after about 3 yrs!!

    1. I’m not a huge smoked meat fan either. The brisket was a little dry, although my husband said he saw others getting a juicier one. We did end up having some of the chicken for dinner — I even had something else I was going to heat up but I just didn’t feel like it.

Their sides were really good, though. A little too good. Mac n cheese, corn pudding. Anything that tastes that good has a gazillion calories!

I got this Garmin because my last one, at the end of its life (although I actually still have it) could take 20 minutes to get a signal sometimes. Seriously!

    1. I miss Tex-Mex, but BBQ was never my thing. We did take the dogs with us occasionally to one place and they’d give them a bone . . . they sure loved that!

The dogs did not get bones yesterday. Oh well.

  5. That’s funny about the difference between BBQ and grilling. You’re right though, down here, if you say BBQ we think pulled pork sandwiches, slaw and baked beans. Grilling is what you do in your backyard. 🙂

I’ve kind of had the same frustration with the weather folks here too…. they say rain, then no rain comes. They say only 15% chance, I get rained on. Frustrating.

  6. Ugh…rain, rain, rain. I drove in downpours several times last week. Yesterday as well.

I only wear my Garmin for races (and not all) so don’t worry about it. I do wear my Apple watch daily but again, I forget to charge but doesn’t bother me at all. I don’t use it for running.

I ate BBQ in Rochester – there’s a place famous for it. I love cornbread and fried green tomatoes abut I could take it or leave it.

We do grill often on the lake and we call it “BBQing.”

    1. Rain is better than snow. 🙂

I wonder if the place in Rochester is real BBQ. And of course, there are actually many different forms of real BBQ. All things I never knew until we lived in TX.

We definitely don’t call it BBQing (and do it a lot in the summer). It’s grilling! Even if it’s got some sort of BBQ sauce on it, it’s still grilling. BBQ is smoked, long & low.

      1. Always been a Northern girl and we all call it a BBQ as long as we are outdoors and there is meat being cooked on a grill.

  7. I loved your comment about BBQ/grilling 🙂 Being from New Mexico originally we are all about BBQ. Sure we grill too, but that’s grilling and nothing more. Here in the Netherlands they call grilling BBQ. I tend to keep my mouth shut because my lovely Dutch friends would still love to argue this fact (along with “there are 52 states” and “Rene(e) is a Dutch man’s name” 😀 Sometimes you pick your fights, eh?

I am constantly losing things but always find them once a replacement is purchased! haha!

    1. 52 states? Really?

We thought we’d find the charger after I got the first replacement, but no, it wasn’t until we ordered the real one (because it was obvious that cheap replacement wasn’t really going to do the job) that it resurfaced.

  8. You are getting it done 🙂 Nice work outs last week!
That sounds nice to get your parents out and enjoy some good food.
I have not lost my watch charger but I have the lost the charger to everything else lol my phone, my headphones…it drives me crazy!
What is up with your forecasters?! My guys down here on channel 12 (peacock – NBC) are pretty good! Most accurate app I have.
