Silver Linings Playbook: 6/4 – 10 Weekly Wrap

I can’t say as I was super happy about the unseasonably cool weather this week — except when it comes to running. On the other hand, running in unseasonably warm weather the previous few weeks set me up for a good race last weekend. There’s always a silver lining, right?

I’m joining up with the Weekly Wrap from Holly @ Hohoruns and Wendy @ Taking the Long Way Home to wrap up another week of training, dodging raindrops, and silver linings.

Running Updates

The view never gets old, even though the workout is damn hard!

Monday
Careful what you ask for, right? Downhill repeats on the schedule since my upcoming half has a 3000 ft drop. I was blessed with a unseasonably cool day (and the rain had ended earlier). It’s still hard. I’m sure it will always be hard.

I was pleased that it was faster than when I did downhill repeats last year — not that I was trying to be faster, in fact the warm up miles were quite slow — and most of all, that my body felt fine the next day.

It’s the only color they come in & I have nothing they match!

Tuesday
I ended up hanging around most of the day, waiting for the guys who were working on our trees to finish. The upside was that my new Newtons arrived. As usual, when I’m in a bit of a time crunch, I run faster (it was a theme for this week). Picked Bandit up for the cool down and he managed to keep a decent pace, too.

Thursday
Or the day I broke Bandit. No, no really, but . . . Thursday wasn’t a frustrating day overall, but there was some frustrating incidents. By the afternoon I was more than ready to take it out on the road.

After 3-speedy-for-me miles (frustration/anger almost always makes me run faster) I picked up Bandit for my cool down. I knew it was a bit warmer than he’d been running in, but he seemed game and didn’t seem tired while we ran. It was only 3/4 of a mile.

When we got home it was a different story. As soon as I took his harness off he just plopped down, which isn’t like him; he’s part JRT and though he does a good couch potato act, he’s got a lot of energy. When we went upstairs and I refilled the water bowl (Giz is constantly draining it), Gizmo of course called first dibs, and Bandit again flopped down while waiting his turn. And afterwards he plopped down on the floor on his side.

None of this was normal behavior and we were getting concerned. Long story short, he’s just fine, but let that be a cautionary tale to those who run with dogs — they don’t always have the good sense to stop before they’re overheated/tired and we have to be mindful of them.

Lovely day along the Hudson

Saturday
If I could dial up weather for my races, this would be it. Although I met up with several friends, I had longer to run so I started solo earlier. The plan was to meet up more friends for breakfast afterwards, and knowing I’m in a time crunch almost always makes me run faster. Again!

Or maybe it was the Nuun with caffeine in it. I like to use caffeine for my races, but most of the time in training I don’t. But as usual, I’m playing around with new stuff and one of the things I decided to try this morning was to have Nuun prior to my run (not during, not after). I had one tube of Nuun with caffeine, and it’s only useful before a run.

Or maybe it was the new Newtons (a different model). I didn’t say I couldn’t find them at all, just that I couldn’t find them cheaply. I do wish they came in more colors!

I ended up with a pretty consistent pace, and quite a fast pace for me. The sort of pace I might run if I were running with Darlene (except I wasn’t). I felt a little knee tightness at one point, but it seemed to open up and I felt okay afterwards. And still feel fine.

Favorites of the week
I took advantage of Global Running Day and signed up for the inaugural Best Damn Race Savannah. In 2019. I’ve wanted to go to Savannah forever, but most of the halfs there are in months that are almost guaranteed to be hot. This half is in February. Even better, it’s two days after my birthday.

I did the inaugural Best Damn Race NOLA last year (read about it here), and I enjoyed the race (if not the heat) and felt it was in general well run — awesome medal, too!

You can join me by using my link here. I get $25 off if five of you sign up. Considering I could barely give away a race entry to UT last year, I’m not expecting any signups but I had to throw it out there. How about it, my Southern runner friends?

Mr. Judy wasn’t happy about the tick possibilities

Today I managed to get Mr. Judy out for a short hike at a nearby preserve. We were hunting for the waterfalls, but we never found them. Of course, we only hiked about a mile. Bandit and Lola were with us, too. I would have gone further, but I was happy to be out there and also to have some hills to climb. I much prefer the hills when I’m hiking . . .

We’ve also been doing a little more landscaping around the house

We stopped at a nursery/farmer’s stand on the way back. We wanted to get some shrubs for various places in the yard. We took the dogs with us, then I saw the “no pets” sign as we were checking out. Whoops! Well, the employee we were talking with didn’t say anything about the dogs. I picked up some corn to grill with our steak tonight.

The shrub above is actually giving us some fits. There were tree roots where we wanted to put and and we’re having the darndest time trying to figure out where it should go. Stay tuned . . .

Blog posts that caught my eye this week:

This week I am also linking up with the Sunday Fitness & Food Linkup brought to you by Ilka @ Ilka’s Blog and Angela @ Marathons & Motivation.

Let’s get the conversation started:

Are you still planting?

What’s for dinner tonight?

Do you enjoy the act of hiking for itself, or must there be a great view?

    1. Did you mean go with me hiking? Or to Savannah, LOL? Not sure which.

As to hiking, he actually usually enjoys it. IF it’s really scenic. Because photography is his hobby & he’s really talented. We weren’t able to find the scenic this time (but I still enjoyed it).

Plus we plan a lot of hiking in ID, so I gotta get him in shape. 🙂

  1. I’d love to run a race in Savannah. I wouldn’t mind a February half in the south, but I have to play it by ear. RA doesn’t let me plan too far ahead!

PS Is there a reason your pictures are so small? It’s hard for my old eyes to make out much detail. Just curious.

    1. Darlene was always complaining about the size of my photos! LOL, can’t please em all.

Between furkids & my parents, I never know if I’ll actually be able to show up to a race or not. Not to mention that that is the WORST time of year to be traveling. But our going out before usually works as a good strategy.

  2. I enjoy hiking just for the hiking part – views are a side benefit! Not necessary, of course. Although, one could argue that the views are ALWAYS spectacular when you’re hiking, it just depends on how you look at what surrounds you. 🙂

I’m glad you had such great weather for your runs! It was pretty nice down here too (until Saturday) but I did a lot less running so I totally missed out. Wahhhhhh!!!! I want a weather re-do! lol

    1. I agree about views always being nice when you’re out hiking, even if it’s not a spectacular hike (and this one wasn’t, I’ll admit).

It’s going to heat up this week but Saturday and today were really beautiful days to run. I’m so glad I could!

  3. I agree. This week was great weather for running. I felt bad that you had to run alone on Sat. It’s much more fun to chat while running. Makes the time go by quicker.

I love to hike but for the views. The hubby doesn’t enjoy it. It will be tough to do any with work and we boat on the weekends.

  4. My husband does lie to hike — this our Yellowstone vacay soon! Glad bandit is ok. Scooby runs great at 5 am but struggles later in the day. I’m sure heat has something to do with it.

    1. Oh, my husband is all about hiking in the national parks. It can be a bit tougher to get him out closer to home. He’s also not a morning person & generally that’s the best time to go!

It wasn’t super hot the day Bandit got so wiped out from running, just warmer than it had been. Doesn’t take much, I guess, and he isn’t a young dog, either.

  5. I am eyeing the RnR Savannah (December, I think), so maybe I’ll get a chance to see what it’s all about. That’s super scary about bandit! Glad he’s alright. I can tell when Max is not “feeling” the heat like I am…I don’t run with him, but our walks get a little slower than usual.

    1. I have to rearrange morning walks with the dogs in the summer. Bandit would be ok, but Lola’s going on 13 & the heat bothers her more these days.

Hiking actually works well for them, because usually it’s much more shaded, but unfortunately Bandit takes his trail marking duties way too seriously. 🙂

    1. So far most of what I planted seems to be doing ok. I’m actually not quite sure about the cherry tomatoes, they might be too crowded, but the roma tomato already has a bud on it. We’ll also see how it all fares when we’re away next month!

  6. I worry about the dogs who run with their owners just because they can’t tell us when they had too much. They will keep going just to please their owners, right? Glad Bandit ended up being okay, but it’s still scary when they act a little “off”.

    1. Heck, I take Bandit out because he enjoys it — I actually don’t really like running with him all that much!

The way things are lining up it’s doubtful he’ll get a run this week. I guess I’m going to have to make sure he runs slower, though. Typical rookie runner. 🙂

  7. Running with dogs in the summer is tricky! Kara gets a summer haircut, but even still, she mainly goes for trail runs with me in the summer. Then she can stop and lay in a stream if she needs to cool down.

    1. Bandit is a short hair. I’ve taken him for cold runs where he’s made it clear he wasn’t into it — if he doesn’t want to do it, he puts on the breaks (which is always annoying because I actually come back just for him!).

  8. I’m glad that Bandit is okay! I’ve never run with a dog but you’re so right about paying extra special attention to them while running in the heat.

I’ve heard awesome things about the Best Damn Race series – I’m sure you’ll have a blast there next year!

  9. Hmmm, Savannah is tempting! We celebrated my 50th birthday there for New Year’s …loved the charm of the old city! I will definitely keep this race in mind!
You’re going to do great at your upcoming half …downhills are perfect for the half distance, a bit too much for the full. Lol 😉

  10. I’m glad Bandit was OK. It’s a great reminder that our pets can get tired and overheated. Savannah in February is very tempting! I’ll put that on my list of possibilities. I hiked last week for several hours in the FL woods (a preserve) and there were no views. But I enjoyed walking , talking and critter hunting with my middle (pre-vet) son. Thanks for linking!

    1. This was also a preserve. But several hours in FL? I’m dying just thinking about that!

I’m usually happy when I’m out in nature, whether there are views are not. Unless there are mosquitoes (I’m a magnet) or stinging insects.

    1. It’s a lot cooler over here! Although heating back up — still cooler than you guys. 🙂

Today I’m running in the afternoon & it’ll be at home. It’s not a hot day, but it will be in the 70s, so now I have to debate about whether or not to pick up Bandit.
