Summer slow down: 8/5- 11 WRD

Quite a bit of rain this week, although my treadmill runs were just due to circumstances, like going to my parents and knowing it takes me less time to run on the mill — and wouldn’t ruin my hair, either.

Running Updates

That heron enjoys the lake

Monday
Actually a cool morning so I didn’t have to rush out early. A nice easy run at the park. Loosely based on heart rate, a bit slower than I’ve been running lately. No doubt due to a couple of nights of bad sleep last week, even though I’d slept ok. This week promises to be relatively busy.

Tuesday
We went to my parents and that meant treadmill speed intervals again — again in a ladder format. Pushed the pace just a little bit faster, felt ok — tempting to keep going with the pace but I think next week it’s time for some easy running.

Thursday
Friends were meeting for trail running, but with thunder rumbling and a long drive out there, it wasn’t my cup of tea, although they were able to do it, no FOMO here. Because of said thunder and not being able to run til later in the day, I kept to the treadmill. Second speedwork of the week, only because I find just running steady on the treadmill monotonous.

Catching up

Saturday
Not running as long as my friends, so I could show up later. Actually, I got there before they’d started, but they didn’t see me and I made a pitstop, so I was behind them a few miles. Really nice running weather. Where was this weather when I was training for 18 miles last summer?

My heart rate was a bit higher than last week (slept badly), so I took it really slowly, although in the end it was just a little faster overall than last week: I’d run a few miles with a friend who is getting back into running last week, and they were really slow — unfortunately she’s now injured herself again.

I may not drink, but I do like grapes!

Favorites of the week
We stopped at a winery on the way to my parents this week — we thought it was close by, but it turned out to be a bit more out of the way than anticipated. It was very peaceful, as most wineries seem to be, although we didn’t spend a lot of time there.

Mr. Judy finally found me a pair of Newton Motions on Ebay! He’s snagged a few Distance models at really good prices, but Motions remained elusive. This wasn’t a really good price, but it was a good price, and it’s my favorite model of running shoe — find out why in Tuesday’s post.

Bandit & I still enjoying the $5 lounge chair.

The look of love (me or the lounge chair?)
The dogs “helping”

Practicing my practicum. I have to video myself teaching a 20 minute yoga class that I design. Let me just say it’s taking a ridiculous amount of hours for me to do this! This was my first time running through it with my friend. I know that with experience it comes easier, but it’s humbling, to say the least.

Yesterday after the long run I rushed home (while everyone else was enjoying breakfast), foam rolled, showered, ate lunch, and then headed out to a 2 hour yoga workshop on the hips and gluteus medius. It was really good (even if I had to circle around about 3 times before I figured out where the damn place was). The first half was active poses, while the second half was restorative/yin.

I wish the teacher had had a handout. I took notes, but some of the flows were pretty complicated and there was just no way to actually try to write it all down. Still learned some new stuff to try at home — especially loved doing a yin pigeon (yin is when you hold poses for a long time to really relax into them) on a bolster.

What was the last thing that humbled you?

What was your last find that didn’t cost much but brought joy into your life?

How’s your summer going?

  1. Totally understand what you mean about the cooler weather this weekend. When I was out running yesterday morning I was so pleasantly surprised with the cooler weather, especially after the crazy humidity this week.

That’s so great that you were able to find the Newton Motions on eBay! I always forget to check there for hard to find items. For a while I kept searching for the Mizuno Wave Inspire 10s because those were my favorite, even though they are a few years old. There’s nothing like finding your favorite running sneakers!

    1. The really old motions are abundantly available – they’re on version 8, so versions 5 and down are out there. But I don’t want it that old. I’ll go back a few versions but not too far.

I don’t even have an Ebay account anymore, but Mr. Judy does & Mr. Judy is thrifty. 🙂

  2. I’m not super dedicated in my yoga practice, though I wish I was . I do like yin…holding a pose for along time is very relaxing, especially as your body releases and is able to go deeper.

    1. I can’t believe you’ve never been to a winery! Wow! I’ve actually been to quite a few. I used to drink wine way back when, but I’ve been there both as a drinker & non drinker. They’re actually usually really beautiful places.

Yup, summer is going Whooosh! 😦

  3. Your dog assistants are the cutest.
I love the random cheap finds. Can I count my last drying rack, which lasted 22 years?
Pigeon. Wow. I can do dead pigeon, although I never mastered dead bug in PT.

    1. A drying rack lasting 22 years definitely counts!

Dead pigeon (I’m assuming you mean knee to ankle on the floor?) is actually a lot safer for most people. Pigeon can also really tweak knees, but the bolster helps support you in a good way (it was a really tall bolster!).

      1. I was so sad when it finally died earlier this summer – luckily Bed & Bath still sells essentially the same one and hopefully I have it for another 22

  4. Always great to find your favorite running shoes at a good price! I look for mine on sale and sites like Poshmark, but I always forget about eBay. I’m on a similar search for my favorite running top…it’s a discontinued style and I really wish I’d bought multiple because they were on clearance for $7!

    1. I signed up for Poshmark, but mostly to look for old Skirt Sports stuff — and then I never look at it anyway. Actually my husband signed up for it too, to look for my shoes, LOL — true love. Unfortunately it’s really tough to get my shoes in my size (unless really used, which defeats the point).

  5. Um … yesterday I found a soap dispenser for the kitchen sink that is more perfect than I hoped to find. It’s the little things! Hearing about your yoga progress help me realize and appreciate the effort my instructors have. I know Ann develops flows that get us ready for the peak pose of the day and it makes a huge difference.

    1. I think once you’re an experienced teacher, obviously, it’s easier. Or if you always made up your own flows — but I never did.

I like what I’ve come up with, but it’s not always so easy to teach it (really communicate it well) — which is totally on me. I also knew I wasn’t quite ready last week. Still not, but I still have several weeks before I have to submit it, too.

I was just glad a friend agreed to be my guinea pig — multiple times!

  6. I tend to do speedwork when I run on the treadmill too – just because I want to be done running on the treadmill ASAP. I wouldn’t run if there is the threat of thunderstorms either. I don’t mind getting wet – I am scared of getting caught out in a lightning storm. Your yoga teacher training sounds intense. I would hate to make that 20-minute video, but I’m sure yours is great. Loved seeing the photos of your puppies!

    1. I’m ok with making the video. It’s an online course, so it’s kind of hard to judge us otherwise.

At some point I do hope to be making Youtube videos — no doubt I’ll hate it when I see it but oh well.

I kind of can’t believe that they actually let you teach yoga after this. I doubt I’ll feel ready. Then again, I would still have to get a class!

  7. Sounds like a great week! I love that photo of the dos “helping.” My cats like to do that too 🙂 Helping or getting in the way? It doesn’t seem to make much difference to them.

    1. The dogs do settle down and go off to just sleep somewhere after they get over the initial excitement.

We can watch some of the former year’s practicums, and one of them a cat was walking around, rubbing up against people, scratching at mats — it was pretty funny. Most people use their families.

  8. I love running based on heart rate and effort – it really tells you how recovered your body is (and how much sleep affects it) . THe yoga class sounds fantastic – definitely something runners need to do more!

    1. Until recently I didn’t have a Garmin with HR (and just didn’t want to be bothered with chest straps).

I do have a couple of books that go over how to train by HR, but I just haven’t had time to go back & look at them with my YTT. I’m spending a lot of time in the default zone 3 on my easy runs . . . I do know sometimes that’s a slower pace than normal for me (and sometimes it isn’t).

Not training for anything at present so it doesn’t really matter to me too much.

  9. Humbling experience. Every time I teach. It’s so hard to balance it all. You have to be an actress. The presentation sells it. Confidence, voice, body language, eye contact etc. yes. I have another new training to learn.

Good luck with the video. You will be great. We are our own worst critics.

And we did see you Sat. But you said 8:00 so we assumed you’d wait for Chris. Hard to coordinate on FB sometimes.

  10. Running has been humbling me for a while. I’m turning my focus to other things right now–strength training and of course, my summer water sports. I’ve given up trying to push through tough runs. I don’t know why it’s so hard. Everything else I do is fine.

  11. do you know why you haven’t been sleeping well, Judy? I also don’t sleep well, but it’s either night sweats that wake me or restless legs that make the first few hours a nightmare. *sigh*

I haven’t had a big humbling experience lately I guess. I mean, I could say with running but I was never really *great* at running so now that I’m slower and have less endurance it just really kind of is what it is. I do know that the last time I felt really humbled was when I went to Rwanda with Starbucks for a week, went to the coffee farms, met local farmers and colleagues who work directly with the farms and coops. My experience there made me see my life in a totally different light and helped me understand that you can be happy and kind, even if you don’t have “all” the things that we get wrapped up in thinking we have to have.

I get excited actually about hair and body products that are on sale to be honest. There’s an organic line of hair care that I love and whenever the shop has a 2 for 1 I buy a whole bunch of conditioner haha!

my summer is going all right. I feel a little bit down at the moment but I think it’s mostly because I’m tired and the stress at work is kind of getting annoying now. I tend to pick up on other’s emotions so when everyone else is also stressed I have to remind myself to take deep breaths and do the best I can in the situation.
