Soul Strolling: 9/2- 8 WRD

Normally I copy this post on Sunday or Monday and start filling it in as the week goes on. I knew I hadn’t been doing much with the post, but on Friday I realized I hadn’t even started it!

Running Updates

Monday
With rain and a trip to my parents, I was on the treadmill for some speed work. Pushed the pace a little again — it was hard, but doable. Not planning to push it again soon!

Fall Colors

Tuesday
Not sure how the week would play out (although still blissfully ignorant of what was going on with my parents), I decided to extend my run to 4 miles. Glad I did, since running will probably be a bit scarce the next couple of weeks.

I was bound and determined to make this a true recovery run, and I succeeded! I kept my HR low, and since I chose a somewhat hilly root, I took walk breaks when it got too high.

This barn looks a bit decrepit I can empathize!

Friday
I had already decided to extend my long run, but just had to move it Friday. With dry air and beautiful fall temps, this was a really strong run.

Except the first mile. I started to run, and my HR shot way up. Walked, and it came right back down. This went on for almost half a mile. I was beginning to worry I was having a heart attack or something, even though I felt fine except for some understandable fatigue from this week.

Turns out the Momentum sparklet I had on that wrist was just edging under my Garmin, causing the sensors to not come in contact with my skin. Problem solved. So despite the uber-slow first mile, I actually ran a fairly normal pace at a decent HR.

Scenes from my parents. I took my mom back to her apartment, but she’ll stay with my sister again when I leave.

Favorites of the week
Wrapping up YTT and passing the test were definitely the highlight of my week, although seriously I was too tired to really feel celebratory. Still waiting to hear on the practicum.

Soul strolls. Google Erin Stutland. It’s a wonderful way to take a walk. Usually I’ve got my hands full with the dogs.

My Dad is improving but slept most of yesterday, still working the sedative out of his system. Not sure what the future holds.

What was your last tech malfunction?

Are your recovery runs actually easy?

When was the last time you took a test that was really important to you?

  1. I had an episode of high heart rate and sweating on my run today–I felt as if I was going to pass out. It happened every time I tried to run. I walked for about 10 minutes and after that I was fine. Very weird and I can’t blame it on a Momentum sparklet! LOL

I hope your dad is going to be ok. ❤

    1. Hope you’re ok! I didn’t have anything like that, just super tired & I knew why.

My dad is slowly improving just a little. He’s slept almost continuously since I’ve been here. I think he’ll be ok, but he will probably almost certainly need some rehab, and the last time that happened my mom was still driving. His mental state remains a little iffy but we won’t really know anything until he’s awake more than a few seconds at a time.

  2. I actually mentioned recovery runs in my post, too. I have gotten so much flack from people, arguing that I should NOT be running the day following a tough workout/run/race. Honestly, the purpose of a recovery run is to run it slow and to give your legs a little bit of movement. I almost always run by feel anyways, so that dictates my pace, and it’s usually much slower than “race pace” the day following LOL Bottom line, they work for me, and I always return home feeling great. I’ve been thinking of you and your family…hoping your father is doing better 😉

    1. I think everyone is different. I know some people just love recovery runs. I’m not a fan but life has been topsy turvy lately.

Thanks for the thoughts, Kim. He’s very slightly better. Just so bizarre than none of us picked up on it.

  3. My garmin went odd after my long run last week, but fortunately I could still see the distance, time and average speed. However I had wanted to track my heart rate – argh!!

I do do recovery runs nice and gentle – sometimes they’re even walks, up a hill, whatever I feel I need. They certainly help and I say that as a fairly recent convert!

Hope things work out with your Dad and you at least know what the future holds.

  4. Congrats on passing the test! I feel like my tech malfunctions all the time – the wrist HR is so hard to be accurate and the chest strap chafes me too much. I hope your dad is ok!

  5. I have never run according to heart rate, but now I am curious. Bill has a Garmin but doesn’t know how to get the heart rate function to work. Maybe I will do a little research. I think I may do my easy runs too fast.

Sending good thoughts to you and your family. Hoping for the best for your dad.

  6. Congrats again on passing the YTT! I’m glad your dad is on the mend and hope he continues to recover well. ‘m glad you figured out the Garmin glitch. Mine needs a knock upside the head. 😉

  7. Other than races all my runs are easy.

Congrats on passing the test. I have to pass a test twice a year on the bar software.

    Hope your dad recovers quickly.

  8. Couldn’t you feel that your heart wasn’t really that high? I have days where my heart shoots up like that. I blame hormones. Heck I blame hormones for everything. Hoping your dad has a better week!

  9. Don’t mind me – I’ m just continuing to play catch up on all the open tabs I had from Sunday
My paces are all over the place. Some of that is coming down from summer humidity, some of it is because “by feel” is a different thing. I can’t go by actual pace as I can’t read my watch on the go. I’m not running my long runs as slow as I probably should, but I think that’s because my time trial was in July heat & humidity. Curious to repeat it again soon and maybe I’ll find out I am running them at the right fall pace. I’m glad i have no planned time goal.
Glad to hear your father is on the mend ish

    1. I’ve been wanting to do a time trial but lately I just don’t have time. I mean, how ironic is that? I’m not going to do it on the unholy hills by my parents!

You should never, ever have a time goal for the first race at a new distance. Especially a marathon!
