Suddenly Summer: 4/10 – 16 WRD

Yup, we jumped right over Spring and into Summer with several days of record breaking heat. Very reminiscent of when we moved in here 14 years ago (also in April). How did that go for me?

Some perspective: today Facebook told me 2 & 9 years ago it snowed on this day

I’m joining Kim @ Kimrunsonthefly and Deborah @ Confessionsofamotherrunner and fighting the sudden heat.

Running Update

Apparently on Mondays I take crappy photos. Actually it’s a still from a video & I never took another photo on this run. I’d seen a photo from a different path with a log filled with turtles the day before. I think there are turtles on the branch but not sure.

Monday intention: add a mile (and go easy, of course)
It wasn’t windy! Yeah! Except I couldn’t figure out how to dress. I was a bit overdressed but I survived. Again paces all over the place, but the last couple of miles were the fastest. I think mainly because it’s a pretty flat path, but there’s a slight incline going out, and therefore a slight decline coming back.

Daffodils. . . . finally

Thursday intention: rolling hills (a little strengthening)
It’s official: 4/13 first day I complain it’s too hot. Well, not complaining about the day, the weather is really welcome, but the run was a drag (as in I dragged myself through it). Sudden heat is never fun. I made the decision to shorten the planned 4 mile run to 3, and do a recovery mile tomorrow. Hopefully much earlier!

This day was also record breaking but I got out early enough

Friday intention: recover
So about yesterday’s run — turns out we broke a record yesterday with a high of 88F. Man that little 3 mile run wiped me out all day long. I had to break out the Nuun. This morning, however — what a pleasure. What a difference a day and starting 2 hours earlier can make, LOL! Did I mention this mile was faster than any mile on yesterday’s run? That’s because of the cooler temps, the cloud cover, and I do my recovery runs without walking.

Do you see any clouds in that sky?

Sunday intention: just do it
They keep saying we’re going to get cooler — and we are cooler than Thursday & Friday — yet still experiencing Summer like temps. I got out much earlier again, so this run wasn’t bad, just very slow. Better to be slow than have no energy the rest of the day! They promised clouds, though; there weren’t any — but at least the leaves are coming out so a tiny bit more shade.

Good thing he’s cute

Favorites of the week
Despite the heat, the weather really was a favorite. No humidity. The bugs aren’t out in force yet. We’ve been able to eat out on our deck. Otherwise it was a busy, tiring week. I did let the cheery crabapples and magnificent magnolias entertain me on this run but I didn’t take any photos. I just wanted to get home!

And there’s this big red I don’t even know what to call it thing on one of Bandit’s back paws. It’s not huge, he’s not limping, but I was alerted to it because he was licking more than normal. No idea what it is and now have to try to get a vet appointment next week — no dog walking today.

ICYMI: I love using the wall as a prop (even if I look dead here). Show yourself some love and practice with me here. If you’re short on time I’ve got a shorter Spring Yin Yoga practice here.

Coming up next Week: Definitely just the Sunday Weekly Rundown.

  1. So even though it was hot and my runs were hard, I would never complain that it’s too hot when we have a warm spell in April! It felt fabulous to be warm.

I wonder what Bandit got into!

    1. No idea about Bandit yet — he’s not licking this morning so it must’ve just happened last night. Maybe we’ll be lucky & it will just disappear.

Aside from the runs, it *mostly* felt great! And the bursting out of Spummer (Spring/Summer) has been really nice, too.

  2. Our heat spell broke (practically with an abrupt crash) yesterday afternoon. The heat went “poof” and the wind turned cold. Currently, there’s some of the winter “white crap” falling from the sky. UGH! I love all the beauty of the spring blossoms, so I hope this winter rewind doesn’t do much damage. I hope Bandit is alright!

    1. I’m sorry about the white stuff. We are cooler although still not cool (that’s coming tomorrow, unfortunately, but minus the S word).

Whatever it is on Bandit seems smaller this morning & he’s not licking it. I’m hoping maybe we won’t need the vet visit after all.

  3. Yes I thought today would be cloudy but it was not… but much cooler than Thurs, Fri and Sat. Looks like those tank tops will go away this week. It always makes me happy to wear skirts again… winter is so long.

  4. There is no way I am ready to run in the 80s. I don’t even run in that temperature in the summer, since I go out early.

    I love daffodils.

Glad Bandit seems to be doing OK.

  5. Yes, it’s absolutely crazy that you were hotter than us! Right when you had your record high temps, we had our deluge of rain. Today it was 88 again though.
    I LOVE the daffodil photo!

    1. I almost titled the post “this week brought to you by daffodils”, LOL! Well, just like your cool temps this time of year are short lived our warm ones are too. And like I said to Marcia, at this time of year I’ll take it over snow!

  6. Those first hot days really do zap the energy out of us, doesn’t it! Phew!! I see we have a potential for snow tomorrow. Good thing I didn’t put away my tights like I wanted to! My skirts were still packed away so no running in skirts for me this past week.

  7. I hope Bandit gets better soon! it’s always upsetting when pets are unwell.
Nice to see you’re able to run more but oh, that temperature! That’s impressive for April. Those daffodils are wonderful! Aren’t they exactly what we need after a long winter?

    1. I so agree on the daffodils! A ray of sunshine (although last week we had plenty of it). Bandit actually seems fine, and whatever it is has shrunk considerably. So now it’s a question of does he or does he not need to go to the vet?

  8. Hope Bandit is doing OK as I’ve come to this late again (on a big catchup on blogs right now). That’s very hot! We’ve been up and down but I went out for my 10 minute test run this morning (run #4 hooray) and was definitely overdressed!
