The heart knows: Runfessions June 2023

It’s a mixed bag this month with no real theme. Between a lot of time at my mom’s and caring for Bandit, running is sort of on the back burner — but not banished altogether. The heart may know what it wants, now if it would just speak to me (it’s a few talking points down).

I runfess . . .
My Achilles started speaking a bit recently, and I couldn’t figure out why. I’d happened to take several days off running at that point. Then I realized that I squat a lot while feeding Bandit these days — here I was thinking how good it was for my knees! After some TLC it seems fine.

I runfess . . .
I decided I really need to lift just a little heavier, at least once a week. I eased into it with a short kettlebell workout using a 10 lb kettlebell. There were a lot of swings. Did I feel it in my legs the next day? Yes. Did I have DOMs? No, and that was a pleasant surprise!

A photo from a couple of years ago — I only had to wear it once this week, but next week I think I’ll need it more often

I runfess . . .
It’s not Summer until I have to use my cooling gaiter — welcome to Summer, folks!

I runfess . . .
My why for running has definitely changed. Now it’s mostly about cardiovascular health. Although my V02 recently went down a little and refuses to come back up. I’m not sure what it wants: run slower (mind boggles)? run faster (I wish)? run more (again, I wish)?

Please tell me you didn’t know what that elastic was for!

I runfess . . .
Am I the last to know that the elastic on your running shoes is to hold your laces? Although I runfess that it’s nice they put that there, but then they put in laces that are so short you really can’t even use it!

Does your why for running change?

Do you use the elastic on your running shoes?

  1. I don’t have a lace holder. Lol.

And my Garmin doesn’t show Vo 2max. Though my Apple Watch may. But I only look at stats for racing anyway.

Not a fan of free weights but at the gym you have the option of increasing the weights in the machines whenever you want.

My running why is probably more of the same. To be in racing shape and mostly to see my running friends. Of course being healthy is inherent.

  2. Do my shoes even have that elastic? I’ll have to look!

I’ve been trying to lift heavier this month. My strength really comes and goes with my Grave’s but I’m seeing progress.

  3. I had not seen the elastic…but I know some of my shoes have a small “loop” in that area. I’d though it was to help with lacing the shoes, to prevent the tongue from sliding (?). Things that make you go HMMM 😉

  4. Yes, I’ve noticed that lace holder but always just ignored it. What in the world does it do, anyway? Why do we need it?
Lifting heavier is good for us! That’s why I started going to the gym- I don’t have enough weights at home or the proper setup to lift heavier. It’s amazing you didn’t have the DOMS- I always get it when I do anything new!

    1. I don’t plan to go super heavy — I mean, obviously 10 lbs isn’t heavy at all. The next time I did a workout with have 10, half 15. I just know from previous experience with swings I have to ease into it or I get wicked DOMs!

  5. Several podcasters I listen to are trying to get the word out to people to lift heavy. I’m doing my part. I also started taking creatine to help with the inevitable muscle loss as I age.
I don’t think I’ve ever noticed the lace holder in my shoes, or if they even have it. It seems like a strange little thing.

    1. I hadn’t noticed the lace holder until I saw a post about it. I actually put the loops of my laces under the crossed laces below them — it helps prevent laces from coming untied — I assume it’s the same principle!
