How to get strong?: 7/17 – 23 WRD

When three of my friends in their early 70s broke something in the last six months, I stood up and took notice. I vaguely remember my mom, too, breaking or fracturing a foot or ankle at around the time (in addition to the breast cancer diagnosis) — and my Dad also broke a wrist from a fall around then (but he was ice skating). Seriously, it makes you think!

What can I do to prevent that?

I’m joining Kim @ Kimrunsonthefly and Deborah @ Confessionsofamotherrunner and I took advantage of the few nice days we had this week — even got to lay out in my favorite lounger chair in the backyard a few times this week!

Running Update

We did have one really bad air day this week, but I think this was just fog

Monday intention: add a *little* speed
Again I didn’t plan on speed but the last couple of runs have been a bit faster. Was it because of strides last week? So I kept that in. Slightly less hot & humid weather (but not exactly balmy). Anyway first run with new Garmin.

Reflecting on finally a nice morning!

Wednesday intention: go long-er
Truthfully I wasn’t looking to extend my run, but what’s a runner to do when gifted with a relatively low humidity day after days and days of hot & humid?

When did THIS happen? It had been a while since I’d run down that far on this trail.

The long incline around the turn round — at least 1 1/2 miles, maybe more, not steep just looong — nearly did me in, but I knew I’d end on a decline and that helped a lot!

Snuck Bandit in here. Mr. Judy was just starting to walk him as I was walking home from my run, so I joined them.

Saturday intention: just run
A pretty nice morning again, but I was still kind of dragging. I’m fascinated with the body battery function of my new Garmin! It told me I recharged well overnight, but suggest I should’ve paid attention a bit more yesterday. I know most of you don’t care about that stuff, but I think it will be a useful tool.

Water never fails to soothe the soul. Hudson River & Catskills in the background.

Favorites of the week
Lucky to find a semi-nice day to visit my mom this week — no check oil light this time!

Art Omi Sculpture Park (Ghent, NY)

Revisited Art Omi & sweated buckets, but thankfully no ticks. Although I did find a tick on Bandit this week by chance — thankfully not attached. I was combing him for the first time in quite a while, and noticed a very small tick moving around. Bagged up that sucker & got rid of it! Phew!

Back to (mostly) living his best life

Bandit is off the codeine for now. There’s a little coughing here and there, but knock on wood so far he’s sleeping through the night.

I might get together with the friend who broke her foot today, but she also said sometime next week might be better. Might be better for me, too, since it was a busy week. Her husband isn’t feeling well, but truthfully, it was a busy week with not as much rest as I’d like. Hopefully sometime next week!

The really big favorite was to get a few cooler days with lower humidity! Unfortunately we’re supposed to heat up again but we’ll see. Things are mostly quiet here. That’s not always a bad thing!

ICYMI: If you’ve been feeling tied up in knots, this practice will help loosen the load — click here for the video (live at 8 am). I am releasing a PDF with 5 Yin Yoga Poses to help with stress in Summer to those who want it in my FB group, which you can join here.

Coming up next Week: I have a few runfessions to get off my chest!

  1. I’ve been listening to Dr. Peter Attia’s podcast (The Drive) and I read his book. He emphasizes how important strength training is for preventing broken bones and other things like mobility as we get older. I plan on keeping it up as long as I possibly can! Love all of your photos!

  2. A friend of mine just face planted during a race. Broke her nose, 2 black eyes and a multitude of scrapes. It doesn’t have to be this way! I focus on strength-balance-mobility all the time.
Hooray for some better weather! Glad Bandit is doing better!

  3. I don’t know if breaking bones relates to strength. Balance issues that can lead to falls sound like more of a risk factor. Or osteoporosis. Of course, being strong can help with catching yourself and your recovery.

Love the sculpture park — I would really enjoy that.

So glad Bandit is doing better!

    1. Strength training can help bone density (potentially) & definitely counteracts the muscle loss as we age. I know there’s much discussion about whether we break bones because we fall or we fall because we’ve broken something as we get older. Obviously sometimes it’s absolutely due to a fall, but other times it’s ambiguous.

  4. I agree with Coco.

I don’t worry about breaking bones. Mine was a fluke. And Judy was doing yoga. Lol.

Omni is quite interesting and quite big.
NYC was very humid. But yesterday was glorious. And today is sunny and warmer. Yay.

Glad to hear Bandit is doing well.

  5. The sculpture park looks lovely. So glad Bandit is feeling good!

So nice to have a few less humid runs! It was steamy in Minneapolis, but got even hotter right after we left (I think they might hit 100, which is rare for them.)

  6. Awww, it’s good to see Bandit feeling better and enjoying life again!

Maintaining bone strength is so important as we age. We not only build bone strength when doing weight-bearing exercises, but also when we lift weights. When our muscles contract, tendons apply tension to the bones stimulating bone growth. So yes, add strength training to your workouts.

  7. Yes, we really can’t ignore strength training as we get older! I wish I had taken it more seriously in my youth, but that’s okay- I’m doing it now.
You had to run farther on a day with beautiful weather!!! I love those runs. Sounds like you had a good week.

  8. It’s so good that Bandit is feeling a little better, and that you caught that tick.
I’m also glad you got to see your mom. That must have been nice.
I wish I had more motivation to work on strength, but I do things to keep me active, regardless, so it’s a small step in the right direction.

  9. That is such a great pic of Bandit ❤ I'm glad to hear he's doing better. I was amazed just how humid it was here most of last week, especially in the cooler mornings. I don't feel it until I stop moving, then I'm a glistening mess, LOL

  10. And now you know why I do such heavy strength training. Strong muscles support our joints. Agility training is also important to help prevent falls when we get older. I know a few people who do Tai Chi, which is supposed to be really good for agility!

  11. such a good point – I’m still in my 50’s but something that I’ve really wanted for quite a while now is to NOT be that 70 year old that breaks something. Or let it be me breaking a bottle of champagne on my new yacht at least ;-). (no plans on buying a yacht. can’t even sail. but life is full of surprises haha).

glad you could get out and it was slightly enjoyable weather conditions!

    1. IDK it seems like all the cool kids are breaking something. 😦 But you can do your best to try to prevent it and then just have faith!

A Yacht, as long as it comes with a chef, a captain, and a cabin boy, sounds fantastic. 🙂
