In & Out: 11/30 – 12/6 WRD

Last week I managed to get all my runs done outside. This week the weather was crappy on and off, and there were two treadmill runs. I’m totally fine with that — I still get outside to walk Bandit — except yesterday. Cold rain all day long? No thank you. Peloton does make the treadmill more bearable.

I’m totally digging a short hike before my run. Soon it’ll probably be too icy/snowy to do that — I wouldn’t be surprised if this week’s were the last. You can bet next Fall I’ll be revisiting these trails before my runs (in the Summer it’s really buggy on this path).

But first I’m joining Kim @ Kimrunsonthefly and Deborah @ Confessionsofamotherrunner, and coasting towards the New Year.

Running Update

Monday intention: easy run (not so much)
I’m finished with the Peloton 5k training, so I finally got around to the Hamilton run. Aside from finding it — and the instructor talking too much despite saying at the beginning that he wouldn’t, it was fine; but not great. Mainly because of the instructor talking almost non stop (slight Hamilton reference there).

The next day I took the Hamilton cycle, and I actually enjoyed that much better. The instructor did talk, but not as much. Not such a great choice for a recovery workout though.

Never know what you’ll see in the woods

Thursday intention: easy does it
The sun was calling my name, and the weekend weather sounded iffy at best. I warmed up with a 1 mile hike — and didn’t get lost this time! I even saw another woman walk up onto the trail as I was doing my cool down walk. I haven’t encountered a soul back there, but I could see bike tread in the mud.

My main goal was to keep it an easy long run. No negative splits, since it’s a decline out and an incline back — no need to push so I didn’t. Mostly pretty consistent. It was a good run — that sun and lack of wind helped so much!

Saturday intention: work on endurance
It was a cold, rainy Saturday, so I chose a Peloton endurance run. With no real races and less mileage, I know my endurance has suffered in 2020. Hopefully 2021 will bring some races — and it’s time to do some more steady state type runs. I was proud of no walk breaks during this run!

Squint & you can see the hawk in the tree (lower branches)

Favorites of the week
I draggedwent with Mr. Judy to another park for a short hike this week. We got lucky and we saw a hawk up close!

It was actually quite close and the photo doesn’t do it justice.

My local peeps know where I am. Gloomy day but brightened by a nature walk.
I’m sure Bandit could’ve climbed down, too, but it would’ve been more difficult for the human holding the leash.

We both also climbed down (separately; someone had to hold onto Bandit) the steep trail to get closer to the falls.

It wasn’t much of a harvest but those are the first two potatoes I’ve ever grown

These potatoes! I truly didn’t expect anything, and seriously, it’s not much, but it took almost no work at all.

Are  you working on any running goals?

I asked for Netflix recommendations on our coffee date — anyone didn’t chime in yet?

How are you dealing with the looooong nights right now?

GWY FAQ 1

ICYMI: With a name of GoWithYin Yoga, obviously, I dig Yin Yoga (now). Have you ever wondered how Yin Yoga differs from other types of Yoga? How it can benefit you? I’m starting a series of short videos that will eventually make up a Yin Yoga FAQ. The first one explains the 3 principles of Yin Yoga here. If you have a question, drop it in the comments and I’ll cover it — eventually!

Coming up on Tuesday: What can lead to injury? Friday I’m TOL (thinking out loud) about how to make sense of what seems needless loss.

    1. We’re out almost every day walking Bandit, so I just wheedled Mr. Judy & said since we had to walk him anyway . . .

We do see hawks in our neighborhood all the time. They’re often floating on the thermals above us when we grill — obviously during the Summer!

    1. Actually, I corrected that, today’s hike was just leftover from last Sunday’s hike, LOL! It’s very cold & super windy, but some sun — we will be walking Bandit soon. It rained all day yesterday so he didn’t get a walk!

  1. That is so funny what you said about the instructor in the Hamilton Run because it is true. As much as I like him and take his classes, sometimes I do get annoyed with the constant talking. Just let me listen to the music! :-).

  2. It’s nice to be able to get outside as much as possible, even when the weather isn’t ideal. I had to run on the treadmill a few times this week. It makes me appreciate my outside runs even more!

  3. I think the biggest complaint about Peloton classes is how chatty the instructors are, but that’s also the biggest draw for some people. Matty is a talker for sure!

I’m resisting bundling up for runs, but I know I’m going to have to face it soon.

    1. Most of them do a pretty good job. I really did find it annoying on that run, I guess mostly because most of what he said was just that — chatter. Sometimes they have really good things to say!

It’s about 30 with a wicked windchill today. Still no snow & the sun is shining so could always be worse!

  4. I’ve said this before, but all of my biking in the fall really gave me an unexpected advantage in acclimating to the cold weather. Granted, we haven’t really had “winter” yet, but I haven’t had to go through that transition period of figuring out how to layer and for what condition(s). So, in other words, I haven’t been too miserable (or frozen) on any of my runs…yet. Stay tuned…we all know it’s coming LOL

  5. We have red shouldered hawks living in our back yard and I love watching them out of my kitchen window. I constantly remind them to leave our bluebirds alone, though.

I met my running goal on yesterday’s run. I ran 5 miles and without walk breaks. Compared to where I was the first half of the year, that was huge and made my heart so happy!

Hope the weather’s a little more cooperative this coming week!

    1. It was really cool to see the hawk. It showed no interest in Bandit whatsoever. 🙂

It was a chilly run today, but the sun was shining (even if the wind was blowing). Mr. Judy was a bit dumbfounded when I told him I’d be running outside. He’s obviously not a runner. 🙂

  6. Sometimes the Peloton instructors can be a little chatty, especially if they are excited about teaching the class, lol. I agree that the Hamilton cycle was better than the run but I still enjoyed both. As someone that hasn’t seen Hamilton, it gave me a nice overview.

    1. I understand about instructors talking but & I’m ok with it when it’s some inspirational tidbit — I just (personally) found a lot of the chatter didn’t add anything. It can be really hard to find things on the app, too, I had to look it up in a browser just to find it!

      1. Me neither, although I did do a Spectrum Select of ten channels to watch football and SVU. That’s streaming too though and not cable like the old Spectrum

  7. I got rained on three days in a row. Not fun. And I almost blew into the Hudson during my 5k. Lol.

Peebles I bet. I haven’t been there in a while. I’ve seen eagles there not hawks.

Hopefully we’ll have a drier week.

      1. There’s an eagle & deer trail there too, and I think a few others. Jan & I saw deer so some day I want to try the deer trail. They’re probably short, but just like short workouts add up, so do short trails.

      2. I heard they re-named them. They used to be colors. The eagles nest is across the river but you can see it from the Peebles. Last time I was there with the group, we saw 6 or 7 deer.

  8. Way to get out despite the gloomy weather. Our morning walk yesterday was in gently falling snow. It was lovely. There’s a hawk here we see daily that I suspect regards Ozzy as a potential snack. Oz may be a tad large for that but better safe than sorry.

    1. We have hawks in the neighborhood, too. I see them often. When we’re eating out on the deck in summer, you can often see them riding the thermals. Occasionally I see them in a tree on the way back from a run, too.

Walking in falling snow is so peaceful! Although I’m perfectly happy not to have any snow right now. 🙂

  9. You would love our neighborhood. We have tons of hawks and even a few eagles. It’s crazy (but also scary with small pets). There’s an owl who perches at our house from time to time, who is HUGE.

We won’t be able to hike this week, because A has midterms and we are puppysitting, but next week, it’s on.

    1. We have hawks in our neighborhood. Apparently eagles have been seen close by, but we’ve never seen any in our neighborhood. I have seen them out running in other places every once in a while — it’s always a treat!

Although quite frankly I have zero desire to live in FL! Nice place to visit though. 🙂

  10. I love the hawk! I’m just gearing myself up to download the Peleton app (I know you won’t laugh at me: I don’t actually know how to pay for it as I’ve never paid for an app in my life!) as my cross-trainer is now turned around and I can actually use it. But haven’t. Um. After Thursday, I’ll be able to put my yoga mat down in that room, too!

    1. Hopefully you figured out how to pay. I think they make it pretty easy, they take your info and then start billing you after your free trial is over. 🙂

I really like the Peloton app, I just haven’t drunk the koolaid (does that translate?) quite as much as some of the other bloggers. I think you’ll fine that following along with an instructor makes it a lot easy to actually enjoy inside rides.
