Snow melts, more snow comes: 2/21 – 27 WRD

My trip to my mom went relatively smoothly. Oh sure, lots of stuff to do for her, but I even got some of my own stuff done for a change. I was definitely tired when I got home yesterday afternoon! Didn’t stop me from running today. Luckily I’d preloaded most of my running earlier in the week, not knowing how the weekend would play out.

Running Update

This was one of our least windy days recently

Monday Intention: go long-er
I wanted to preload a long-er run into this week, as I’d be at my moms for a few days towards the end of the week and there’s a potential pesky Winter storm on its way, too. I decided to add in some hill repeats while the streets are clear — nothing too crazy. By the time those were done, I was close enough to 4 miles to add on that extra half mile. Whether or not I get in 3 runs this week remains to be seen.

That elusive yellow thing in the sky captured in a puddle. I got to wear a vest & baseball cap on this run! By the time I walked Bandit about 20 minutes later the temperature had dropped almost ten degrees & I was back in a beanie.

Wednesday Intention: easy does it
I wanted to go somewhere to run, but with most paths still unreliable and unsure if they were clear or not plus getting ready to go my mom, I chose to stay in my neighborhood. I also chose to run towards the nearby college because I hadn’t done that in a while and by the end of the week the sidewalks most likely will be snow covered again.

The college has a row of trees that are nice for a fartlek on the way back, and I started to do that. It was a warm morning (yes, finally!) and I noticed my heart rate shot up much higher than normal. There are times this happens and I know it’s just a weird reading, but this time it seemed to be accurate. I guess my body wasn’t happy with sprints, warmer temps, and an uphill. So I cut that out! It was still a good run and my goal was to run easily originally anyway!

A rare positive split run day, but I pulled out a faster last mile (the uphill was done!).

Sunday Intention: easy does it
I like to take a rest day after going to my moms, but I also wanted to get in a third run. It was cold and windy this morning and I wasn’t feeling an outdoor run. I decided to do a 10 min Peloton WU run followed by a 30 minute endurance run (which had some mild hills). It would have served me well if I hadn’t hit the indoor bike button by mistake on the WU run — well, it still did serve me well but I don’t no the exact mileage of the run. No biggie.

I knew I’d be outside walking Bandit, so no worries, I got in my fresh air for the day.

Lovely window reflection (even before the iPhone photography course I loved reflection photos!)

Favorites of the week
The trails at Olana were for the most part snow and ice free! I got to hike a little bit, anyway.

Not so favorite? The time it took to clear the car after the snow and ice at my moms. I’m too short for Mr. Judy’s car! Not only can I not see the middle of the roof, I can’t reach it either. It was quite the workout. The roads were clear, though, so I was happy I was able to actually get an outside walk on Friday. I thought I’d be cooped up inside all day.

At home, by the way, we didn’t get the ice. What we did get was a lot more snow!

Sun on new snow. It never disappoints.
Interesting patterns from the snowblower on the driveway

ICYMI: I’m going to help you play big (instead of small) with this Yin/Restorative Yoga practice. It’s a great neck and shoulder opener, and will open up your heart, too, which physically helps you to breath deeper. If you’re looking for a relaxing evening practice, I highly suggest this one! I also have a short vlog with some thoughts about when is the “right” time to practice Yin Yoga.

Coming up on Tuesday & Friday: Tuesday it’s time to wrap up the short month of February. Did you hear I turned 60 this month, LOL? It’s like running a marathon. On Friday of course I’ll join you with your hot beverage of choice to chat.

  1. I love all your pics, Judy! You have a lot of great shots your artistic eye has captured 😉 Yesterday, the sun was so bright, I really noticed how “blue” the shadows look on the snow. I’d noticed it many years before, but the shadows were almost turquoise in color yesterday.

    1. It’s funny I’ve been there SO many times you would’ve thought I’d taken the window photo already! Thanks Deborah, yes, it was a pretty good visit to my mom. Helps that one of the chiming clocks isn’t working!

  2. I’m so happy you had a good time with your mom and still had a little time for yourself. I know how all-consuming those visits can be and I’ll be heading to see my mom in a couple of weeks.

I love the window photo with the trees reflecting back at you. That’s a great shot!

  3. Sounds like you got some good runs in, and joined me in the “elevated heart rate” club. Yes, I don’t obsess over the data from my watch, but when things aren’t feeling right, and my watch is telling me my heart rate is up, i know there’s something there.
I’ll chime in with the previous commenters that your photos are beautiful! I like the reflections.
Hope you have some good weather this week!

  4. On our group trail run today, we were talking about elevated heart rates. One of the women is training for a race and was told to keep her HR under 145 for today’s long run. Mine was at 165 (so was hers) and we weren’t pushing our pace. I felt good, so I didn’t worry about it, but she was, lol. We were running on snowpack, and even though our pace was slow, it was a hard effort.

I do love that window reflection photo!

    1. Occasionally I have a rogue high HR & I know it’s just the Garmin being wonky. This time I could tell that wasn’t the case. At this time of year usually I don’t even see it due to the long sleeves.

  5. Very nice pics this week Judy! I also love the stone on the building with the reflection in the window. The sun is everything lately. When it’s out it feels so much stronger than just one month ago. Bring on spring already!

    1. I’m glad you visit went well and you didn’t have to drive in dicey weather. We might see 70F next weekend (just a one day spike), although we have gotten snow in March before. Overall it seems like you had a good birthday month. 😉

  6. So glad that your visit with your mom last week went well 🙂 you got some amazing photos this week too!

Our grounds were clear of snow for a few days, but then we got an ice and hail storm a few days ago and part of our front yard is still a sheet of ice. We’re expecting a warmer day on Wednesday so i hope that will melt some of it!

    1. Ice is the worst! We got snow (here, snow & ice at my mom, but luckily not on a day I had to go anywhere). Plenty of snow. It’ll take a while to melt but thankfully I don’t have to chip away at ice on the driveway again!

    1. Less stress is definitely always good, LOL! Unfortunately the aide missed her doctor’s appointment (which was why she was taking time off) so now it has to be rescheduled.

Seriously, I don’t know why she doesn’t go down the day before. It’s a 2 hour trip so planning to go to a doctor’s appointment with that scheduling. assuming the train will be on time — it’s just asking for trouble.

    1. Yes, the snow can get tiring — although we actually haven’t had that much this year! It is what it is for where we live.

People who enjoy things like skiing & snow shoeing of course don’t mind it. 🙂
