Going with the Flow: 7/11 – 17 WRD

A busy week even though I really tried to get in two rest days — the second one was a bit too busy to really qualify as rest, though. Especially when my sister texted to tell me the aide is having more medical work done and I’ll be going down at the end of the week for a couple of days. Running was decent, though.

Not really a cutback week. I’m probably going to take a week off of running soon — and wanted to take advantage of still relatively decent weather before the heat moved in.

Running Update

There were rays shining through the clouds that the photo didn’t capture. Angel rays.

Tuesday Intention: just go easy
I didn’t prepare for this run the night before — because I planned to run on the treadmill. It was almost 70F when I woke up. I got out early to walk Bandit instead, and it was cloudy and felt okay. So I decided to run outside. Of course by the time I got finished with our walk and changed, the clouds were burning off. I just ran easy, only slightly paying attention to HR — which was normal.

Warm & humid day but cloud cover helped a lot

Thursday Intention: just run easy
I just ran. Didn’t watch HR too much; it remained fine. My guess is either heat adaptation or maybe I am just really sensitive to dehydration — I made sure to have Nuun (in addition to lemon water and green tea) before this somewhat early run. Didn’t watch pace either and that was pretty slow. Running in humidity is never my favorite thing but it wasn’t too bad plus there was really good cloud coverage.

Shadow play (post run Dogwalk)

Friday Intention: recover & keep loose
A beautiful morning — much nicer than yesterday — and yet my HR was high. I haven’t given up, but it seems to have no rhyme or reason. I wasn’t as well hydrated as yesterday, since I got up later — but I had a much better night’s sleep. It was definitely loose & easy!

Catching the moon

Sunday Intention: just flow with it
Just building base right now so didn’t feel the need to do speedwork with an early run that still started in the low 70sF. HR was good (with no peaking at it until after). Pace was slow, but faster than earlier in the week (while much warmer) with a decent pace the last mile — this is usually due to me skipping my last walk break in the last mile.

Always ready for my treat

Favorites of the week
My first swim of the Summer. The water was cold, but we just acclimated to it slowly and it felt lovely (to me, anyway). Wish the rest of the day could have been as relaxing as the morning!

Got some nice photos of Bandit on our walks this week.

ICYMI: Hips in bed? Yes please! Practice with me here, I’m also breaking down shoelace (you may know it as Gomukhasana or cow pose) and its many variations here.

Coming up on Tuesday & Friday: Tuesday I think maybe I’ve cracked my HR mystery? & on Friday I’m sharing 5 things you need in your trunk during Summer.

  1. I see the rays in that picture! I’ve had a cutback week this last week as we had temps in the mid 80s early on and I had a horsefly bite – although these temps are not high for the US, I know, they are here and it’s not worth making myself ill. Got a nice one in Thursday then ran to parkrun on Sat and the last mile back, again relatively pleasant, so at least got into double figures for the week. Now it’s 86 just shy of 6pm and tomorrow and Tuesday we have HIGH NINETIES forecast so not doing anything except sitting in front of a fan with a cool drink and the cats.

    1. High 90s is definitely high. We’re expecting a heat wave starting today, although technically I think you have to have 4 days over 90. It’s hot! Not quite sure where I’ll squeeze in a long run next week & whether or not I’ll drop down to 6 miles.

Sorry about the bug bite! That isn’t fun.

  2. Glad your heart rate has been under control. I had a humid run this morning but my HR was ok the whole time. I think it was the highest when I was climbing the hills (and I was walking up them!). They were so steep.

    Cocoa loves her treats!

  3. Yes, I always drink an electrolyte drink before AND after long runs nowadays. I think it helps a lot. Sounds like you had some good runs- I’m sure you’re acclimating to the heat.
Glad you got in a swim! That must have felt amazing.

  4. It is nice to get into the pool, isn’t it?! I do think humidity plays a part in the HR. As you know, I am not a fan either! Interested to hear what you think is behind it
