It was a somewhat busy week with a trip to my mom and an early long run. Very glad I got that done before Summer started to come back again! I used to run very early all the time, but over the years I’ve found that can feel tiring after a while — even though I’m up early naturally (and doing my Yoga then).
There are really only two ways for me to beat the heat though: run on the treadmill or get my butt out there early. I haven’t run on the treadmill recently . . .
I’m joining Kim @ Kimrunsonthefly and Deborah @ Confessionsofamotherrunner, and slowly building up a base again.

Running Update

Tuesday Intention: keep it easy
Going to see my mom is always a long & tiring day, so normally I wouldn’t run the next day. I definitely don’t usually do my long runs on Tuesdays either. It looked like the best weather so I decided to roll with it and just keep it easy. No pickups/surges just easy miles. The weather was cool at the beginning, getting a touch humid (but not hot) at the end.

Wednesday Intention: recover
Of course normally I wouldn’t hike Monday, do a long run Tuesday, and then run again Wednesday. I’m trying to embrace the cooler mornings before the next heat wave and the recovery run at the same time. Even I have trouble running slowly enough for it to be a true recovery run, but it’s certainly not fast.

Friday Intention: easy — acclimate to warmer temps
That was the intention. Just like my intention for this week was a cutback week. No on both counts. I set out for an easy run, and it wasn’t a hard run, but I found myself putting in surges in the last couple of miles anyway.

Saturday Intention: recover
I’m getting out there earlier and earlier to beat the heat. I definitely took this run easy.

It was still somewhat cool, getting a touch humid, and for whatever reason my pace was slower. Which is not a bad thing for a recovery run.
Favorites of the week
Will we or won’t we? My mom was super excited by the fact that we could join her for her Memorial Day picnic. Unfortunately Mother Nature didn’t get the memo, and while the rain held off, it was far too chilly to eat outside — we are still not allowed into the dining room. So a picnic at Olana it was.
We could bring Bandit into my mom’s apartment, finally! We joined her to chat after her BBQ. My sister and BIL came too. Everyone except my BIL was maskless (BIL won’t get vaccinated). Still inching back towards normal.

A maskless catchup walk with a friend today, too.
If you celebrated Memorial Day how did you celebrate?
Have you had to adjust when you run due to the temps?
Training or just running?
ICYMI: An hour Hatha Yoga practice. I believe that you need the Yin and Yang practices. This practice will help you get strong legs. You’ll find the video here.
Coming up on Tuesday: Since it’s heating up, let’s talk about ways to conquer that heat. On Friday I’m sharing tips if you want to hike with your dog/s.
Memorial Day seems a long time ago. I don’t remember it being cold. I believe I went hiking.
Unfortunately the best time for me to run is noon. So hot hot. I guess I could run at 5am.
Yesterday was a scorcher but always easier with friends. Just running even though we are all racing next Sat.

I would much rather run when it’s cooler so I get out there early. The struggle is balancing that with also walking Bandit before it gets too hot.

I would assume that Lloyd can walk him sometimes.
I think I need my sleep more and it’s dark that early so heat it is.

It is not dark early in the morning anymore. I’m up around 4:30-5 & the sun is already up. I may have to skip my am yoga to get my run in earlier tomorrow.

I’m impressed with anyone who is out running at 5 am. My fault because I have stuff going on every evening so I go to bed too late. Anyway I’ll be hiking 10 miles in the Catskills tomorrow.

Sounds like a great week. It was hot down here in FL and my daughter was visiting so we had a lot of pool/beach time.
The treadmill has saved me here in Florida. Once the humidity hits it doesn’t matter what time you run, it’s brutal. I only ran once this week, between my daughter visiting and now this crazy head cold, I’ve been down for the count.

Pool & beach time sounds heavenly!
I’m so sorry you have a cold. Hope you feel better soon!

Yay animals but YAY maskless visit. it’s the little thing

Yes, the little things indeed. Also just running!

So glad you got to see your mom for Memorial Day! It definitely warmed up over the last week. Getting out nice and early really is the only way to beat the heat.

It’s funny when I first started running used to get out much earlier in the mornings!

Love all the bunnies that stopped by to visit your place this week, lol! They are really cute.
I’m so happy you were able to see your mom!
You were smart to do the bulk of your workouts in the beginning of the week. The air quality has been so horrible here this weekend – I have no clue how people were able to run outside if they didn’t do it super early in the morning.

It was a lot in the beginning of the week but I’m REALLY glad I could — and did — do that.

I also struggle to intentionally run slow enough for it to be a recovery. I usually will do cycle or a walk instead bc I can go easier. I hear you on the getting up early to beat the heat. I wonder if it is the heat that tires me out or the getting up early!?

Even though I’m always up early, getting out for a run really early does wear me down eventually. Although there’s definitely satisfaction in reaching 10k+ steps before breakfast. 😊

Thanks, Liz! The turtle was quite something. We did see a bunch in the water today, but way too far away to take photos of. Also quite a few ducks.

I was happy to have real summer temps back, all week! It takes all guesswork out of what to wear for running (biking is a bit of a different story). Such pretty flower pics, Judy! The dreary day probably enhanced the photographs because it made the colors pop.

I am never very happy to see 90s. But can’t change it & early days so far so not too bad.
The sun did come out on Memorial Day. By the time we were back in the car heading home, of course.

Last spring, I saw a turtle laying her eggs at the forest preserve. It was very cool to see that! We have a lot of bunnies in our back yard; in fact, that is how Cocoa injured her back, trying to catch one. Sheesh. Glad you got to see your mom and that Bandit could go too!

Oh, poor Cocoa. We often get bunnies in the backyard. Bandit can really only get the babies (and Mr. Judy did fine baby bunnies back there earlier in the Spring).
Being able to take Bandit inside again is a huge help. And my mom likes to see him.

Glad you could spend time with your mom- maskless even! Wow. Such progress.

I know, right? No masks! Apparently in CA if even one person isn’t vaccinated everyone is supposed to wear their masks. But even better is being able to hug my mom again.

I forgot it had been a holiday week until I finished up my blog today! The days have just flown by this week. It has been so nice going places without a mask. I feel like a winner every time the sign says “for those fully vaccinated”. Yay science!! I’ve been seeing some cute little bunnies on my runs lately. Such cuties.

Those cute rabbits also chow through almost anything we plant in our backyard! Between that & making sure it’s dog friendly it’s been a challenge.

I love the bunnies! I wish I had some hopping around my yard. They mostly stay in the forest where I live.

I’m happy when they’re in someone else’s yard. Then I don’t have to call Bandit off them or have our hostas decimated. 😊

If it makes you feel better, at least you can say the bunnies ate the hostas and you didn’t accidentally run them over with the lawnmower. I’m guilty of that last bit 😅. But my hosta grew back this year! They’re hardy plants.

The hostas are actually in a plating under a tree, so they don’t get mowed. 😊 Maybe the bunnies only like them when they’re new? This year they seem intact.
Last year we planted black eye susans which apparently rabbits LOVE & they completely mowed them down. We used to have daisies that came over from another yard; those were safe but eventually died out. Maybe we need to actually buy some.

Yeah, maybe if you plant lots of stuff they don’t like, the bunnies will stay away!

It’s funny, I read Darlene’s comment and Memorial Day does seem like a long time ago! I had to look at my calendar to make sure it really was this past Monday.
Love the pics of the flowers and bunnies! When I saw the picture of the turtle my first thought was, “hey, that’s me!”
Hope you continue to inch towards normal this week!

I definitely will need beat-the-heat strategies this week. I wasn’t ready for it Saturday and cut my run short.

I think we’re supposed to cool off mid week, so I shouldn’t have to move up my long run quite so far this week! But I am planning to try to get out there early tomorrow morning.

The flowers at Olana are beautiful! Here’s hoping you can find the right balance between going out early to beat the heat and not feeling exhausted the rest of the day.

Oh, I’m not running long or hard so it’s not so bad & our heat is supposed to break mid week. But thanks! Yes, the flowers are lovely there & there’s always something new to see. I’ve been there at least 10 times in the last 12 months (probably more!).

You were smart to front-load your runs – I was not prepared for the sudden heat of the latter half of the week and weekend – ugh!
Great that you got to visit your mom and being maskless is a nice bonus! More steps towards normalcy.

Yes, not wearing a mask was great, but as I said to someone else the best was being able to hug my mom again! Of course that started on Mother’s Day. Very appropriate. 😊

I’m always impressed when people wake up very early to run. I prefer the evenings but now it has gotten so hot all of a sudden! I’ll have to go out even later than usual. I managed a few outings last week, including yesterday.
Yes to bunnies! I keep seeing them too!

I am just not an evening person at all & if I run in the evening I have trouble sleeping. We’re all different! Most important is finding what works for you!

I would run in the mornings if I could get my body to cooperate, but for some reason I also end up doing them later in the day. So treadmill it is. Although I kinda prefer it. Sorry your picnic was a bit chilly but at least you got to see your mom.

Even though I’m a morning person it can still be hard getting out early enough with this mini heat wave! Today was my earliest so far. It was still a bit tough but I just took it slow.

We just had drinks and snacks with friends on Memorial Day. Nothing major.
we are definitely dealing with the heat. It means we have to slow waaaaay down.
