I am determined to respect my body and give it the rest it wants — while trying to move gently, too. I seemed to find a good balance this week. What I didn’t find? Myself, outside, as much as usual. The ice stuck around for days because of the the mostly cold temps — I went food shopping one morning and getting back up the very icy driveway (we live on top of a small hill) was definitely tricky.
The subject also refers to our slowly expanding daylight!

I’m joining Kim @ Kimrunsonthefly and Deborah @ Confessionsofamotherrunner, and moving and resting in equal-ish measures.

Running Update

Tuesday Intention: take it easy
It was cold and windy, and if I were feeling normal maybe I’d run outside. Still fatigued but wanted to run so it was a treadmill run. Did the Rent run — but failed to notice that it was only 20 minutes & an outdoor workout as well, so also had to tack on some cool down. A rock musical is a good soundtrack to run to. Felt good after, seemed to feel okay the next day. #sorrynotsorryiranonthemill

Thursday Intention: still easy
After days of cold, wind, ice — or all three at once! — I finally got outside to run. I had to gingerly walk down the driveway because the ice hadn’t yet melted, although it was gone when we walked later in the day. It was slow, I felt tired, but it was definitely nice to be outside.
Sunday Intention: a slight push
I did the Peloton ABBA run today, so there were some surges and some hills. I also tacked on some strength training post run. Tomorrow I’ll probably be doing some shoveling. I can remember long ago watching Mama Mia while running on the treadmill (it was still negative temps when I ran) — it’s another great soundtrack to run to! Even though it was going to be very cold today, the wind was absent and the sun wasn’t, but I didn’t want to wait until later in the day when we actually had some degrees.

Favorites of the week
Hard to believe it had been almost three weeks since I’d visited my mom. It wasn’t much of a visit, really, as I had some important stuff I needed to take care of for her which had me in the business office for much of the visit. I got it done, but no doubt the insurance company will come back with more requests. Truly hoping I’m building up some good karma so someone’s gonna help me out with this stuff when I’m her age!
I am very grateful that the treadmill is an option again. Even though I’m not training for anything, I still want to run, and super cold weather and lots of ice has made that difficult lately.
I have also observed the longer daylight and that makes me happy too! It’s not getting dark until almost 5 pm now. Don’t laugh, for us in December it’s full on dark by 4:30 pm, so this is a welcome sign of the warmer, longer days ahead. This week I’ve slowly been feeling better, and I’m sure the slowly expanding daylight is also partially responsible for that.

ICYMI: It’s all about the hips & glutes this week guys — I might even sing. Just a tiny bit. I go a little bit deeper into what Satya is in this week’s vlog.

Coming up on Tuesday & Friday: Tuesday: is it ever too cold to run outside? I started to write this post before all the cold descended on us! Friday: will strength training make you a faster runner?
glad to here that you are feeling better. Obviously it helps you to cut back on the runs and rest a lot.
I’ll answer Tuesday’s question – Never! Just dress properly and call a friend or two.
Unfortunately, my running routes are limited to where I can run. I have to drive into town (I hate running in my boring neighborhood) or drive to the Crossings. Although I don’t love the cold weather, I’m getting used to it. It feels so invigorating and after awhile if you run long, you actually get warm.

I struggle a lot with SAD. Always have. I was so much happier in TX — in the Winter anyway. At least this year hasn’t been as bad as last year was for me. I keep working on it but hopefully soon we won’t have to stay here all winter.

It helps that I get to sunny Florida twice a year.
I think it has been sunnier. Even though it was cold I tried to be outside today and yesterday. Because the sun felt great.
I don’t plan to move and leave my friends. But I’d love more warm weather vacations.

I’m ok with hibernating a little. 😊 Although I was out early yesterday to do my food shopping!

I’m with you on the treadmill! I forgot about the ABBA classes. I prefer taking the music classes outside because they tend to have less structure and I need structure on the mill!
I live at the top of a big hill too, and if it’s slick I have to make Scooby go very slowly – basically pausing every step!

I’m not sure I’d say the ABBA class was structured but it was most definitely not steady state either! And the songs just make me smile. So happy I can do inclines again.
Luckily our hill is small, but I’ve fallen on my butt going down the driveway on more than one occasion. Even though Bandit can’t drag me I do have to remind him to go slow sometimes when it’s slick or when we’re hiking. He’s pretty good about it.

We had a skating rink on the driveway this week! I was grateful for the mini-thaw we had midweek. It was really slick!
Is it ever too cold to run? You know my answer to that!!! I ran that race last February when it was -20ish. But no wind and sunshine made it tolerable. As did my thermoball…

No wind & sunshine make a huge difference. We had some very windy days this week! Was happy the power stayed on.

ABBA totally rocks! I didn’t do any of the runs, but I did several rides and stretches and strength workouts. I repeated a few because the music was just. so. awesome. Truthfully, I haven’t really noticed the increased daylight here because it still feels like a “strange” place to me so I have nothing to really compare the days to (if that makes sense?). While I will have a nasty re-acclimation to the cold upon my return to Iowa, I expect the daylight change will be very obvious 😉

I agree on ABBA.
Sunset at 5 instead of 4:30 was really noticeable for me! Down south the sun rises & sets later, though.
I read a fascinating book recently & it talked about setting up a snowbird stay to support your health, but that was for people staying the full winter. I’ve never gone anywhere that long in the winter though. Hoping to soon (although not this year).

Glad you’re feeling better! You got in a nice balance of runs and yoga this week. Reading through the comments here- SAD is what made me move to Florida. I just decided life is too short to suffer like that. Of course, not everyone has the option to just move wherever they want. I was at a transitional point in my life and made the move! I hope you find a way to spend some time down south in future winters.

I could detail my multiple moves, but that would be a long comment! Let’s just say I’ve been going back & forth between south-ish/south & way north (with unfortunately way more time in the north) for much of my life.
We plan to move somewhere . . . not FL though! Someday. Right now it’s my mom keeping us here. It’s unlikely that she has more than a year or two left. If that.

Wow, I had no idea how early it gets dark up your way. Sunset is around 5:15 for us now.
At this point, you have put so much positive in the karma jar that lots of good things should be coming your way when you need it!

Yup. Not as bad as when I lived in VT though!

I am fighting the good fight and supplementing vitamin D3 like crazy so hopefully I will not be horribly deficient this year. I have noticed the sun setting almost 30 minutes later now and I love it. At the solstice it is dark here at 4:15 in our central time zone.

I’ve been doubling up on D, but I’m going to try a transdermal cream soon. We’ll see if that helps more.

I was giddy to still see some daylight at 5 pm this week – progress!
I hope you’re feeling better – important to give your body the rest it needs.
Thanks for the reminder about the ABBA – I had forgotten about those classes.

Love the ice feathers in the first picture. Sounds like you had a good week and taking it easy when your body needs the rest is important. I’m glad you are feeling better, even though I haven’t read your posts lately (been off for a while) so don’t know if it is SAD or something else too. My dad used to have SAD. He would never admit it, but was always down in the winter. It’s not getting dark here now until around 5:45 – 6. I’m so happy.

I think SAD has a lot to do with it for me. Even though my vitamin d was in normal range last time it was checked, just barely. Which is not where you want it to be!

Looking at those photos I understand why you use the treadmill!
You are wise to respect your body and give it the rest it wants. I am old but I have never followed this easy rule! I take a break when it’s too late!
I hope you are feeling better.

Thank you, yes, slow.y feeling more energetic.
We actually haven’t had that much snow yet this year, but we have had ice & some very cold & very windy days. But that’s normal for us.

Luckily on that day the ice was only on our driveway. So it’s just a matter of getting out to the street. I like to run down our driveway usually but I’m careful & don’t do that much in winter.
I think you guys are even grayer than we are & we’re very gray!

I don’t know if it’s ever too cold, but maybe too dangerous. Thinking dark/black ice.

I think some people never think it’s too cold, but it wouldn’t be worth it to me, anyway, if it were below zero and windy.
Luckily I’m okay running on a treadmill.

Hopefully there won’t be too much snow and ice this week. It was brutally cold for a few days here last week, but the ice is what really keeps me on the treadmill. I’m so terrified of slipping and falling.
I’ve noticed a little more daylight here in the evening as well. I’m just happy it’s not totally dark at 5pm anymore.

We didn’t get that much snow, although there was some ice too. Our patio and the path to our backyard gate — to take Bandit for a walk) are incredibly icy. 😦
