I had to deal with a slight setback to running in April. I am not training for anything, but I just want to keep my running base. Is that really too much to ask?
I runfess . . .
I was thinking about running my first race of 2023 last weekend. It’s a race I did last year (read about it here) and enjoyed, plus basically on the way to visit my mom, so a win-win.
I runfess . . .
I instead discovered why my last run during our mini heat wave in the middle of April was so slow. That afternoon and evening my neck was really bothering me, which was totally weird because I hadn’t done anything to it.
I runfess . . .
The next morning I woke up with a fever that had me doing squat for days. The timing wasn’t great, I had a bunch of stuff that really had to get done.
I runfess . . .
I felt as though I had finally found a nice balance between recovery and running, and wasn’t running all that much anyway. I had nicely rebuilt my base since having to take time off at the beginning of the year.
I runfess . . .
I’m really tired of the cycle of finally feeling normal and then suddenly getting sick. The only slight clue this time was my resting heart rate had been a bit higher than normal (although no huge jump) for a few days that week. I had chalked it up to the heat.
I’d been working hard on a variety of things, but I really felt as though I took enough breaks to balance things out. Still much to be grateful for and I knew I’d get the things I needed to get done in time.

I feel you on being sick more often. Maybe you’re picking up bugs when you visit your mom?? Ever since changing jobs I’ve gotten sick more often and I hate it. Maintaining a running base can be a challenge!

I’m sorry you’ve been struggling too. For me it’s burnout, I think, even though I try to use every tool in my arsenal to prevent that! Could be the same for you. You are WAY busier than I am!

Many people blame Covid for losing their resistance to germs. IOW avoiding contact with people for so long.
Obviously I had a bigger setup and missed many races.
Hopefully I get to finally run one in May.
Hope you are feeling better.

As I said to Marcia in my case I think it’s burnout. And nope I don’t think it has anything to do with COVID. A lot more due to long distance caretaking.

Yes, as you know, I have had some very unexpected setbacks myself. I am not one to give up so I will get back there. It is very hard for me to have grace and patience for myself.

You have definitely been dealing with a lot of things! I’ll get back where I was too, but as you know, it’s frustrating. I have zero doubt about you!

This year has been a good one for me, but the previous year was nothing but setbacks. So I get it- it’s frustrating! Hopefully after this last illness, you’re ready to move forward again. These things definitely seem to go in cycles so maybe it will be smoother sailing for you now- I hope so!

It’s not really that I’m sick often. Pretty sure it’s burn out every time. I think about how much you simply battle through, though, Wendy!
