I’ve had my fill: Runfessions August 2023

Of mosquitoes. So why am I so tasty to mosquitoes? This article here made for interesting reading. I’m a heavy sweater — it seems to be almost the only criteria I really fit. Except that, like many runners, I do enjoy a banana sometimes. I wish there was a way to avoid being bitten without having to douse myself with chemicals. I feel as though I need to go through a vat of repellent to have any hope of enjoying the outside!

Of course now is the time of year that the wasps are also on the rise . . .

Notice the incense at the back left — it stayed lit this time and I didn’t get any new bites!

I runfess . . .
I sort of look like I have the measles from all the mosquito bites. Every time I heal up one set, I get new ones. Some seem to get a bigger reaction than others — it seems random.

I runfess . . .
I bought and used insect repelling incense sticks, that’s how bad it’s been. I’ve been tortured in some of the videos I’ve filmed! They actually do seem to help (you can buy them on Amazon here — Amazon Affiliate link).

I runfess . . .
Speaking of the insect repelling incense, I fantasized about running with a couple of lit sticks in my hands. That’s how bad the mosquitoes have been! Obviously this is not a good idea; do not try this on your run, LOL!

I runfess . . .
After a recent run the top of my foot was painful. Maybe a 6 on a scale of 1-10. I’ve had this happen before, and it resolves by the next run but it makes you kind of anxious, right?

I runfess . . .
I think I’ve figured out my top of foot pain. I usually do toe squat and thunderbolt pose after runs as part of my post run stretching. Thunderbolt pose is similar to hero, but your heels are directly pressing into your glutes, rather than having your feet alongside your lower legs.

I do this pose frequently, usually with no pain whatsoever, but I think maybe the fact that I’m still in my running shoes is a problem. Yesterday I just did toe squat. But most of the time it’s just fine with my shoes on . . . bodies are just weird.

Have you had any running fantasies lately?

Do you sometimes feel your body throws out random niggles to just get your attention?

  1. Mosquitoes love me, sadly. So do the biting flies. i have no qualms about using repellant–I don’t want to get any diseases that come with bugs. I don’t think it has anything to do with blood type. Women get more bites than men–it’s probably something in our blood!

    1. I use repellent, but I really don’t want to spray myself with DEET. I am happy to report I was bite free from my adventures on Wednesday! And from filming my latest video (due to the incense).

  2. I seem to have avoided the mosquito bites this summer not sure why. I am trying to do that hero pose more often bc it really helps my feet. I always do it barefoot. My big toes get really tight so I also do it the other way and ouch!

  3. Mosquitos love me too. But my son never gets bitten! We can be standing right next to each other, and I’ll get 20 bites and he gets none. It’s not fair!
I don’t like Hero or Thunderbolt because of my plantar fasciitis- but I like “broken toe” (I think that’s right? It’s the one where you sit back on your heels but your toes are flexed under you- that one is GREAT for me!)

  4. I thought mosquitoes were drawn to certain blood types. Maybe that’s you? We’ve been pretty dry here and as a result mosquitoes aren’t too bad. It’s great those incense sticks work!

  5. I’m almost afraid to jinx myself, but I don’t think I’ve had a mosquito bite yet this year (or at least this season). We’ve had a little rain, but overall I think we’re still n a drought…I’d gather that’s a big part of the equation.

  6. I get eaten alive by mosquitos! I’ve heard fans can keep them away, so I need to try that out on our patio.

I bet you are right about doing that pose in your running shoes!

    1. Today I didn’t do any post run stretching at all because I thought we were going to walk Bandit but my husband actually did it (sort of) while I was running.

The weird part is I’ve been doing that stretch after runs a long time, but thankfully that’s only happened a couple of times.

  7. One of the reasons I prefer running to walking – all other things equal – is it’s harder for mosquitos to take hold. I am lunch when on mom & Bob’s porch but the spray works in the park. Probably because they also spray the park

    1. I don’t usually get bitten up walking Bandit & there are so many long stops. I think sweat comes into play. Because we don’t walk fast & usually go early, I think I don’t sweat as much. It seems it’s really individual.

  8. My body is just one ongoing niggle, lol! I hate it. I need to do some foot flexion work, because I can’t bend my right foot out flat like that anymore, and I hate it.

The mosquitos usually leave me alone. But the fire ants always seem to find me.
