Where did THAT come from?: Runfessions December 2023

In November if was wrist pain and a very stiff neck for a long time — both of those pains resolved. But the niggles never seem to end, do they? Although some days this one is more than a niggle.

I runfess . . .
It seems I’ve finally fallen prey to Plantar Fasciitis. I think. It’s not bad enough to seek out PT (and of course seemed worse right after my annual).

I runfess . . .
I couldn’t understand it. Seriously, there hasn’t been much running, or hard running either. How is this possible?

I thought my shoes were maybe 6 months old, and I run in a few different shoes always (one pair is pretty new). Again how could this happen? Then I looked up the age of my shoes and apparently these running shoes were bought in March — even so I can’t really imagine they have that many miles on them.

It definitely feels better when I don’t run. Still I immediately started with some Yoga therapy poses (yes, it’s a thing, and no, I’m not a Yoga therapist or physical therapist) that I’d used some time ago, maybe when my Achilles was bothering me. I read that PF can be linked to the Achilles. Couldn’t hurt, anyway, and they do seem to be helping.

I immediately bought some new shoes, and it didn’t seem to hurt as much after Monday’s run wearing them. Of course I’d already started those exercises (and some other things), so there’s no way to really tell if or what is helping.

Happy to see 2023 in the rearview mirror? It was a tough year, but it could be worse and there were a few trips, I discovered new places to visit near my mom, and Bandit is doing well at the moment.

What are you looking forward to in 2024? We have one trip (fingers crossed) the end of January — yes it’s a sad occasion, Mr. Judy’s boss’s funeral — but at the same time it’s a chance to visit Austin & hopefully catch up with some friends. There’s another tentative trip on a much happier note later in 2024.

  1. PF is so annoying and often comes out of nowhere. I highly suggest sleeping w the Strasbourg sock it works miracles. And yes, the Achilles is often the root so stretching that is key. Lots of great YouTube videos on both check out Bob and brad

  2. Oh, the dreaded PF! I know so many people who have it- and most of them are not runners. So it’s not necessarily caused by running! Mine is actually better when I do run- I guess running keeps it stretched out or something.
    The good news is there’s lots you can do for it, and it sounds like you have some good treatments going. I hope it clears up soon!

  3. That’s one of the things nobody tells you about aging. Stuff seems to crop up out of nowhere. Hope the PF resolves itself quickly. I have an associate who gets PF from simply standing. Go figure. Happy New Year Judy! Hope 2024 is a great year for you!

  4. Oh, PF is the worst! I found that serious calf stretching is a huge help. I hope it passes quickly for you.

    I’m sorry for the reason for your Austin trip, but it will be nice for you to get away. Can’t wait to hear more about your other trip!

  5. Ugh on the PF. Tight calves are a risk factor for me. And I have to be careful with my non-running shoes — to make sure they are supportive and that I mix them up.

    I am glad to see 2023 come to an end. I have one fun vacay in the works for 2024, and am excited to make more fun plans.

  6. Thankfully, PF has not staged a return since the summer of 2016. I remember it as being a huge annoyance, though, that also came up from out of nowhere. For me, the two times I had it (one foot in 2015; the other a year later), it hurt more for walking than it did running. Both times, it started with a heel spur. I did a lot of foot/arch massaging, before stepping onto the floor, first thing every morning. I still do the foot massaging, not daily, but a few times each week. Knock wood, it has stayed away. I hope yours mellows and resolves itself soon!

    1. Mi e feels much better when I don’t run & doesn’t really bother me walking. It wasn’t bad at all this morning (ran yesterday) but I’m continuing to work on it.

      There were a couple of runs recently that really irritated & I was like how do people deal with this for YEARS?
