Why are Runners Stupid?: 1/15 – 21 WRD

I mean seriously I should know better. So I got on the treadmill Monday, and while the left foot felt reasonable, I’d tried out some new walking shoes the day before. I’d loosened the laces but I guess they were still too tight. I knew it was hurting to run (and doing a little speedwork) but I figured it’s only 2 miles. Not at all a good idea.

I’m joining Kim @ Kimrunsonthefly and Deborah @ Confessionsofamotherrunner and trying to find a shoe that doesn’t hurt and not running (but doing other forms of fitness).

Running Update

This was from Sunday’s snow squall. We had a few that day.

Monday intention: a little speed
This run was on the treadmill because of the previous day’s snow squalls. While it was barely a dusting of snow, too much black ice around (and of course, cold!). This was a bad, bad idea though. My left foot definitely isn’t 100% but it was doing pretty good, but as you now know, I injured my right foot..

Because of cold & squalls on Sunday everything was coated in a thin layer of snow & there was a fair amount of black ice. Hence treadmill run.

That night it was very painful. I’ve had this sort of thing happen before — the irony being I’d bought a couple of new pairs of shoes to try and pacify the left foot and I think one of them may have been the culprit. Or maybe not . . . read on.

Pre-sunrise shoveling photo from the next storm — thankfully fluffy snow but still very cold

Favorites of the week
Well it was a bitterly cold week like much of the country, but hey, I got to rest my foot more because did you notice what was missing? Dogwalks! Or much walking at all.

So the right foot. Not quite sure what happened, and it is better, plus doubtful it’s broken. Doesn’t hurt at all to wiggle and move my toes — did I just bruise something? It pretty rapidly improved, but unlike the last time I had this sort of thing, it is definitely not 100% and I know it would hurt if I even tried to run. I don’t really see the need to see a doctor as it’s not that bad, but it is frustrating.

The stationary bike doesn’t bother it so I’m embracing that and grateful I have one.

Here is where things sort of get interesting. I happened to read a post on Facebook from a runner I sort of follow, who had something very similar happen. Bought new running shoes from Amazon, the same model she’d been running in, and yup — she got injured. She thinks the shoes are fake.

I’d run in these running shoes a few times with no problems. Was it just that the new shoes for walking had created a minor injury that just got exacerbated in just a simple 2 mile run? Was the shoe a fake?

I read some comments about those shoes yesterday. I clicked on the 1 star reviews — yes, there were a lot of complaints about the shoes hurting people. So now I’m back to what the heck will I run in when I can run again?

Anyhoo, I actually do think my body has really been appreciated the break (from running, that is). It’s not like I was running much, but sometimes I really struggled to recover even from slow, short runs. Stationary bike definitely doesn’t have the same effect.

But on to the good news! First before all this happened I’d ordered some new insoles which came yesterday. They actually fit and they seemed to help.

Also finally made the switch to our new desktop (I think I mentioned this in the coffee/tea break)? Despite not liking a lot of what they did to Windows 11 the speed is just awesome. I can boot in literally a couple of minutes vs the 15 minutes it used to take. Very happy about that!

Coming up next Week: WRD.

  1. Too bad about the foot. At least you are not crazy and sign up for all the races.

Hope it heals. I have stayed with Topos for years. I switched briefly to Altra and I fell and sprained ankle ligaments. Not wearing those again. lol.

Dr Google is often my friend but I’ve had to see a podiatrist many times in the past. You never know.

Yes it’s been inhumanly cold. But Ualbany is always clear and dry. I’ll be there every evening I guess.

    1. Well my foot went from barely being able to get down the stairs to walking with just some sensation — since usually there’s not much drs can do for that type of thing anyway, I’m just doing my best to let it heal.

      1. LOL, I am really good at being a stupid runner. I hope you’ve figured out the shoe issue and that your feet are happy soon. I

Yikes on those snow squalls. Walking Scooby is really treacherous because not all neighbors shoveled their sidewalks, and there are a lot of random icy patches. It’s going to be warm and rainy this week, so it will be washed away soon.

      2. We don’t get squalls like that a lot but thankful to be home during it!

I thought I might stop to walk where I usually do on the way home from my mom, but the sidewalks weren’t cleared enough — I feel you!

  2. Ugh hope it was just the shoes that irritated your foot and it will quickly heal. I have annoyed my foot in the past by walking in boots for a long time. Maybe a nice epsom salt bath would feel nice?

  3. OMG, fake shoes? I never thought of that, but I could totally see some slimy company doing that. I hope the new insoles help and you’ll be able to continue to wear them. Running shoes aren’t cheap!

  4. Oh no, Judy, I’m sorry to hear this!!! I hope it gets better asap. Our feet are seriously our most important body part (other than heart, lungs and stuff obviously, lol)!! I learned that the hard way myself last year as you know.
What an awful shame if the shoes are fake. That gets my blood boiling!

  5. Hmm, that’s interesting- did you get the shoes from Amazon? I’ve had plenty of mysterious foot pain over the years, and it can be really frustrating. Sounds like yours is on the mend- and luckily you have the stationary bike until you feel comfortable running again. Good luck with it!

    1. Yes, I got all the shoes from Amazon. This is the third of fourth of this style running shoe. I’m not sure that’s what’s up — the PF is fairly tame since I already know running tends to make it worse and I’m not running or walking as much. The other foot is better, but not good enough to run on. 😦

  6. You could return the shoes to Amazon and buy the same pair from the manufacturer, just to compare…

I can’t believe how much fake stuff is sold on Amazon. It’s mind boggling. I hope your feet feel better!

    1. I’m returning the walking shoe that I think started the whole thing, but I might just hold onto the running shoe, because it’s wasn’t that expensive as running shoes go (that should be a hint!) but I’m kind of at a loss what to run in when it feels good enough to run. Good idea though, thank you!

  7. I don’t know if I’d go so far as to say runners are stupid, LOL, but they sure can be stubborn. We’re also quite skilled at ignoring pain when we’re focused on training 😉 All joking aside, I hope what’s going on with your foot pain sees signs of recovery and healing.

    1. We can definitely be stupid. What I did was absolutely stupid. So don’t do what I did (not that you’d be running on the treadmill anyway, LOL)! I had my reasons, but now I can’t run at all. So there you go.

  8. Sorry about the foot and shoe issues. I’ve heard awful things about shoes purchased from Amazon. My husband bought a pair and they came looking clearly as though they’d been used. Gross. Hope your foot feels better soon.

  9. That snow! Wow! I hope you’re getting warmer weather now.
I had some brand new shoes that caused major issues with my Achilles. I think I bought them on Running Warehouse. They were lower drop shoes than I normally run in, unbeknownst to me when I bought them. Now I check that. Not related to your issue, but new shoes can definitely cause problems.

    1. A little warmer and a warming trend coming (but expected snow tomorrow too — hopefully not too much).

These were actually a newer model of the same shoe I’ve been running in a while, & I know that can cause problems. I do still think it was the walking shoe that started whatever happened but who knows?

I wondered about places like Running Warehouse actually. I know fakes really are rampant everywhere. We just want to run, right?

  10. I haven’t switched over to Windows 11 yet, but I do have to work on one and it’s a bit different for sure! There are some nice features. I use a Macbook for home. It’s always such a nice treat to get a computer that loads up fast! I hope the shoes are treating you better soon. I had to re-lace my husband’s shoes because they caused pain on the top of his foot. That’s an easy fix -wish they were all that easy!
